A skin cancer drug has reversed Alzheimer's in mice - raising hope that it could be similarly successful against the incurable disease in humans. Now families of Alzheimer's sufferers are now bombarding physicians with requests for the drug, called bexarotene and marketed as Targretin.
In research published in the journal Science, mice were engineered to exhibit Alzheimer's symptoms - such as forgetfulness and rapid cell death. After they took the drug, they became instantly smarter, performing better
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio added that plaque in the mice brains that was causing Alzheimer's had started to disappear within hours.
Six hours after mice were given the drug, amyloid levels fell 25 per cent, and eventually fell by 75 per cent. The effect lasted for three days.
Clinical trials for humans are being designed and should produce results his year, researchers said.

My mom does a little micro-waving but no more cooking on the range. I share what I cook with her but she has lost so many teeth she doesn't like to eat things with meat in it and I don't like much that doesn't have meat in it. She's good with yogurt, pudding, cooked and dry cereal, tuna, p-butter (lots of peanut butter!) and a few other things that don't require cooking or just a bit of nuking.
I would do more cooking for her but I want her to remain as active as possible as long as it isn't too stressful for her to accomplish. I hated doing it but I had to make her stop using the stove. She would put bacon on and walk away and forget about it.
My mother put a sweet roll in the microwave and fired it up for about 15 MINUTES, and brought the fire dept out. Twice. She now has only a mini-fridge, and eats in a cafeteria.
Newt comments on clearing the way to use new drugs as soon as possible in his C-PAC speech.
It has to be the pure organic virgin kind. You can get it on line like at amazon or iherb too.
My father is starting down The Alzheimer’s path too.
We take 2 tbsps a day of coconut oil in a smoothie. Frozen berries, milk (juice or other kinds of milk would work too), a little banana if you wish, and a tablespoon of ground flax seed, optional. Blended you can’t even taste or feel the coconut oil because it becomes minuscule solid bits because of the frozen fruit. I think it’s yummy.
Mice are way cheaper than primates. They can be bred so a great number are genetically identical. Mice age much faster than primates.
Ever hear of Micemeat Pie? ‘You are what you eat’ goes the saying.
So many do.
Look up Curcumin, also. A friend of mine has seen improvement in his mom with it.
Having a history of the disease in both of our families, my husband and I have been taking tumeric. The Linus Pauling Institute is doing studies on it and the preliminary studies look good.
Ceasar is home!

My mom has been taking Turmeric for quite a while now. Both for dementia and arthritis. It is an exceptional anti-inflammatory. She also takes glucosamine-chondroitin and recently she has stopped using her walking stick and walker and comes downstairs regularly to show me she isn't hurting anymore and can walk upright instead of hunched over. For about four years she wouldn't use the stairs unless I was with her and she had no other choice.
In addition to the coconut oil, turmeric and glucosamine-chondroitin she takes inositol, a multi-vitamin, lithium (over the counter not Rx), 10k iu of Vit D3, fish oil and flax seed oil. I also bought some lecithin for her but haven't worked that into her lineup yet.
On her own she decided she wanted to start drinking coffee again which has been cited as potentially preventative for Alzheimer's so I said "go for it" and she drinks several cups per day now.
Oh, we also decided to dump her Namenda and Aricept as well as the Fosamax she was taking. I have my suspicions that her improvements may be due as much to that as the supplements she is taking.
Why?
This is what Dr. mercola says about what it has to be extra vergin unrefined organic:
“In contrast, most commercial coconut oils are made from copra, the dried up meat from coconuts. Using the cheaper copra-grade coconut means that the oil extracted may not be sanitary, and, in my opinion, it is not suitable for human consumption.
It must not be refined or purified. In fact, this type of inferior coconut oil is called RBD — refined, bleached and deodorized.
Mass-producing coconut oil in this manner typically uses nutrient-removing heat, chemical solvents, bleaching agents and sometimes even hydrogenating processes, which can create trans fats.?
“
At any rate here is 1 gal of Virgin Organic Coconut Oil for $44.95 + shipping on Amazon which is almost half the price of Wal-Mart's Lou Ana. Thanks to this discussion it looks like I've found a new source! ;-)
