Is sugar as dangerous as alcohol and tobacco?
One group of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, says so. And they are urging a tax on sugary treats and some action by the government to get Americans to cut back on sugar.
In an editorial published today in the journal Nature, the UCSF doctors, Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt and Claire Brindis, said the ballooning rates and costs of obesity, diabetes and other diseases, mean its time for regulators to lump sugar into the same category as booze and cigarettes and put similar restrictions on its sale and availability.
Increased control is necessary, they say, because efforts to keep excessive sugar out of the American diet have failed. So far, evidence shows that individually focused approaches, such as school-based interventions that teach children about diet and exercise, demonstrate little efficacy.
The authors say the government should consider taxing any processed foods that have added sugar, including soda, juice, chocolate milk and sugared cereal.
Other efforts should aim to make sugary foods and drinks hard to get, like imposing age limits for buying soda and controlling when and where sugary foods are sold. They also envision something like a sugar-free zone around schools.

Consuming sugar is a choice, likewise tobacco and alcohol. Being overweight is a choice, using drugs-legal or illegal-is a choice, having unprotected sex with persons of either gender is a choice. No one can hold a gun to an adult’s head and force them to pursue either healthy or unhealthy habits, and it is no one’s business anyway. Likewise, an adult’s choices should not put them in a protected class, as if they had nothing to do with their addiction, obesity or having gotten HIV/AIDS. Enough nanny state crap already...
For those still curious about the liberal fixation on government-funded health care, it’s simply this: through it, anything that can be claimed to have health consequences will be subject to government control. Anything.
It’s easier to just drink in the morning.
I believe it was the FDA which happily declared that there’s no constitutional right to eat whatever you want.
...and Slurpees for the sugar!
.
Alcohol is distilled form grains, which are a secondary form of sugar. I’m a recovering alcoholic. It isn’t so much the booze itself that did me in as much as having the mother of all sugar allergies.
I get tired of people talking about food “is bad for you”.
Sugar is not “bad”.
There is NO SUCH THING AS “JUNK” FOOD.
This kind of talk is just accepting their premise - the problem, people don’t want to exercise, and they want eat a JUNK DIET.
For this, “liberals” want a shakedown on everyone else.
Which is pretty much everything.
I’d say this is more about control. They want to tell everyone exactly how to live.
Right you are!!! Chairman Obama will control your every thought and action. And we wondered why so many close advisors to this president express admiration for Mao. If you control the little things, the big things will come far more easily.
One group of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, says so.
I'm sure those esteemed researchers from UC know how corrosive, and dangerous O2 is, so why do they continue to breath?

Another causality of the War on Drugs. now that the federal government claims a power to control what you eat, drink or smoke and with the federal government funding health care you can expect the federal government to tax or prohibit anything it deems is bad for you.
” Get rid of anything that they view as remotely unhealthy. “
It’s not about ‘health’, per se - it’s all about esthetics... Libs claim an unassailable right to live in a world filled with beautiful people, doing beautiful things..
Hence, fat people and tobacco users and all but the most protected class of PC sick people are just icky, and therefore deserve any and all tactics and methods of extermination....
Sugar is the ultimate food in the chemical sense. Our brains live on glucose and oxygen. First they outlawed plant food, e.g. carbon dioxide, and now the lunatics are coming after the animal kingdom.
Of interest to you ~ and you may wish to keep up on the literature on the matter ~ they used to believe that everybody in the world had the same set of half a dozen genes that control the growth, development and operation of the liver.
In more recent times they found that there were 11 such "gene sets" in play. That turned porphyrias and alcoholism (in all its various manifestations) into anomalous liver gene processing. Like if you have one of these sets you might not get the enzymes you need for processing various foods. Many Sam'mi' can't metabolize alcohol at all for eample; others have problems with statins; others don't produce enough of the right type of heme (either right handed or left handed); and so on.
I kind of backed out of learning everything about this situation when they got the count up to 82 different genes or gene sets (I think they're all on Chromosome 17).
Actually, the seasonal porphyria where you produce the wrong heme can result in a very serious anemia and require the consumption of Vitamin B-12! A number of alcoholics have that problem ~ they used to believe it was a result of alcohol consumption, but it's the other way around ~ somewhere B-12 gets leaked, so there you go.
Most of the research appears first in Swedish and Finnish medical journals. That's because they have all those people with anomalous liver genes! The reports are in English so you'll be able to read them. Maybe you can't understand all the technical jargon but there's always a synopsis that gives a good idea of what is going on.
Good luck.

Liberals are dangerous...can’t we tax the hell out of them? An additional 15% sounds ‘fair’...
What utter idiots.
We’re already paying twice as much for sugar in the US due to government intervention, than the rest of the world.
