Romney: Welfare State So Successful We Don’t Have to Worry About Poor
Stop the ACLU ^ | 1 Feb 2012 | John Stephenson

So, we shouldn’t worry about the poor because we have a welfare state that keeps them on a crutch (or “a float”). I understand that his focus is on the middle class and that he believes these were the people hurt the most by the financial situation in America, but is the underlying philosophy here to just “fix holes” in the “safety net” or should we be trying to fix the entitlement mentality that helped pull us into this debt? This should be red meat for Newt who worked to reform welfare. Some are defending this as being taken out of context, and it very easily could be…but the underlying philosophy to keep the poor “a float” in their dependency on the government sounded pretty clear.

Looks like they’ve strapped Mitt to the roof of their car!

Taken in context, he seems to be saying that all we need to do about the poor is provide a safety net.

As opposed to the idea that we should find ways to raise people out of poverty so they can join the middle (or even upper) class.

Romney wants to make sure the poor are comfortable in poverty.

Newt wants to put them to work.

This morning there was a story about the best elementary school in the state as compared to the worst elementary school in the state.

Bottom line: The reporter compared neighborhoods and parental involvement or lack thereof.

Bottom-Bottom Line: As observed by me and the lovely Mrs. N. Theknow: The best school and its students were strongly supported by parents and their property taxes paid for the school. AND...

The other taxes of those same parents of the best school went to pay the housing, food stamps, school lunches, and welfare checks for the parents and students of the worst school.

I hope at least he tried to show some outrage.

I'm sure many were convinced.

“Unless I’m mistaken it was Ronald Reagan who relied on the safety net for the poor when proposing free market approaches. Does someone dispute that? Was Reagan supporting the “welfare state”?”

Newt moved beyond Reaganism and abolished AFDC

Well hell there grubby Mitts, the reason the middle class is in trouble is because we’re paying for all those poor! Geesh!

I love these long campaigns! Here is a Romney pitch right down the middle to all 3 candidates to hit out of the park. Each will do so in a manner that is meaningful to their base voters.

Newt has the best chance to put his soaring, inspirational brand on this one, enough to reach the General Election base voter.

With 3 candidates hitting this one out of the park, the toll on Romney could be significant, as each Candidate will attack Romney from a slightly different angle. It will be much more effective than if only one candidate attacked Milk-Toast Mitt.

Although Newt is the most capable of the 3, Newt has yet to learn not to be such a crybaby. In similar circumstances, Candidate Reagan used the phrase “there you go again” to great advantage. Newt stubbornly refuses to learn that valuable lesson: a put-down mixed with a good humor smile.

I find poems to be a useful shorthand for complicated topics, as follows:

When Newt is on message,
He can’t be beat.
When he pouts and whines,
Voters recoil and retreat.

“Message, not Money”
The lesson cost dear.
Will Newt remember?
That is not clear - - - -

BTW, if Newt can learn from the election in Florida, he may not lose again.

I literally can not stand Rick Santorum. He reminds me of Huckabee. I wish he would pack it in and go home. He is just an angry looking distateful man. Yes! Exactly. I just can’t get past it. Plus he is an enormous bore.

You both nailed it. Santorum has ZERO charisma. He is delusional if he thinks he can excite the people to get behind him.

It doesn't matter how wonderful one's beliefs are, if you don't have the "it" aka charisma, you will not be a leader.

I had to turn Rush off again. I’ll listen to Levin later. He seems to be the only one willing to expose Romney!

I stopped listening after Bloody Thursday. I have no doubt that Rush wants Mitt as the nominee -- I am certain of that.

What did he say this time? Levin is the only one I listen to now. Levin truly cares about our Republic. Levin really took it to Romney and his minions on Tuesday.

I suggest we work to nominate Newt or Rick and not focus on mocking any of the republicans.

You're right.

There's no challenge in mocking Romney. It's so easy, even Romney can do it.

Let me make this clear, I have not endorsed anyone for President. I find much that distresses me about both Mitt & Newt. But Gov. Romney makes a major mistake in not attacking the present Welfare system. To understand how wrong it is, see Constitutional Overview. Pay particular attention to how the "safety net," worked in Jefferson's day, to appreciate the terrible damage we are doing both legally, socially & economically, by what Mitt flippantly suggests he can fix without much thought or attention.

When Mitt is a god on his own planet having endless sex with his wife and populating said planet, he won’t have to worry about the poor at all.

“all we need to do about the poor is provide a safety net...”

For too many poor, the safety net has become a hammock.

I come from “working poor” i.e. oil field or trailer park trash, and the primary way out for most of us, is education, hard work, stable lifestyle (married) and thrift.

“Romney’s mindset seems exactly the same as the Democrats.”

That’s what bothers me about it too.

Now that the poor are completely dependent on the government, it’s time to get the middle class there.

Great graphics. It is beyond insane that many on our side think that this man Romney who has zero relationship with the common person is going to win the elections against the Lord and Master of class warfare Obama. Those people living in a delusional world totally detached from reality.

Then Rush needs to go after Romney just as aggressively as he goes after other big government loving liberal Democrats!

Do you listen to Levin? Rush lacks the passion that Levin has when discussing Romney.
