Sudden unification could cause 3.65 mln N. Koreans to enter S. Korea: report
SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Yonhap) -- Sudden unification between South and North Korea could cause a flood of refugees across the land border that could rock the local labor market, a business organization said Tuesday.
A report by the Korea Employers Federation (KEF) predicted that if the North Korean regime collapsed suddenly, up to 3.65 million people from the communist country may cross over into capitalist South Korea.
"Even under a conservative estimate, up to 1.61 million North Koreans may move to South Korea, mainly because of the huge difference in wages and employment opportunities," the KEF said.
It said such a wholesale movement of people could seriously disrupt the local labor market and cause other social problems.
"North Koreans who migrate into South Korea will probably find work as menial laborers and take over positions held by foreign migrant workers," the federation said.
There may be some 470,000 jobs that North Korean workers may be able to fill immediately in case the two Koreas unify, although exact numbers are hard to predict, it added.
The federation, representing the interest of entrepreneurs, said government policymakers should carefully look at the confusion caused in the aftermath of Germany's unification to prevent similar developments taking place on the Korean Peninsula.
They stressed that measures must be taken to limit wage hikes in North Korea after unification so it does not endanger sustained economic growth.

all of a sudden folks over there are contemplating reunification. It leads you to the conclusion that some folks know things and are preparing.
The former West German’s had to deal with a similar problem when the wall came down.
Nothing like a news story about something that won’t happen any time soon, that and daily Demi Moore updates. Meanwhile, in Egypt, United States Citizens can’t leave, the economy shrank last year, Gunwalker (what’s that??), and Newt Gingrich farts - film at eleven. The news organizations, that vaunted 4th estate of America, are doing their part to ensure we collapse.
That was a fascinating process. In just 44 years, Germany had become two separate peoples who looked on each other with distrust and even spoke with distinctly different accents. Given the atrocities of North Korea, I'd expect the division will be even more pronounced.
I don’t know. Those Chinese business owners who are moving their factories to Vietnam because they can pay Vietnamese workers $100 a month instead of that whopping $300 a month they pay Chinese workers, could probably open up some factories real quick in North Korea and pay $25 a month.

At the end of the War, Germans were making a mad dash for the American lines to surrender. After reunification, the two sides assumed the natural resentments that arise between dependent and patron.
If anyone needed more facts to illustrate the lies and distortions coming from our Universities and our media regarding Freedom vs every heavy handed government “ism” all they need to do is look a N/S Korea or E/W Germany.
In both cases you have a common people and common natural resources but different governments. The type of governments that maggot in the WH and our universities and media would like us to implement have shown themselves to be 100% absolute failures by any measure yet even today the battle rages on with 1/2 the USA thinking Progressives (AKA,socialism/communism/Marxism) are the way to go.
Unless we somehow take over the media and universities and even the garbage in public schools we will lose this war without even firing a single shot which is EXACTLY how the Communist Manifesto described how to overthrow this country.
We are at war and the bombs, bullets are the lies and distortions of the left and even the GOP has been severely compromised as it is painfully obvious they are ignoring the lessons of the Tea Party in the last election.
What sort of defense do we have against these information bombs other than a few web sites like this or Rush (ehhhh), Glenn Beck (much maligned by many in spite of all the great information he provided)? Hell even FOX seems to have gone over to the dark side.
I see nothing in our arsenal which can do anything but slightly slow down the bombs and bullets from the Progressives and certainly nothing which will cause a reversal back to the brilliance of the Founding Fathers.
Thanks to the vermin professors in our universities the US Constitution has been rendered to a position of just another historic document which is irrelevant to the current day. We have a FAILED US Supreme Court filled with political hacks who seem to have great difficulty determining what the Constitution means on various issues, hence all the 5-4 decisions.
It would seem we no longer have enough people of character like the founders to offset the government teat sucking crowd and constitutionally ignorant masses.
Companies are moving out of China for lower wage countries such as Viet Nam, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Indonesia. In Cambodia that means $76.00 per 60 hour week. Chinese workers get from $280.00 per week in Jiangxi province to $460.00 in Shenzhen, that's take home pay including over time.
Chinese factory wages have risen 20% annually over the past 3 years.
It seems that the Chinese are pricing themselves right out of the slave labor wage market.

Practically speaking, the best response to a sudden collapse of Nork would be massive food aid, ships full, to its various ports. This would come with the simple message: “Stay here for the time being, because this is where the food is. Eat as much as you can.”
The next step is to create gigantic “food camps”, preparing the food for them, as they have minimal fuel to cook with, encouraging people to eat big meals there, then transport a lot of cooked food home for themselves and anyone else that cannot travel. As more and more food arrives, build more such places inland, to reduce travel time.
Relatively speaking, food buys a lot of time to get things moving again, so tens of thousands of SKor social service people would be deployed all over Nork to facilitate the creation of town governments, communications, supply routes, medical aid, identity papers to figure out who is where and how much of everything is needed hither and yon.
The better the initial response, the more manageable the refugees. With even a minimum of order reestablished, there would also be a huge outflow of illegal alien Koreans from China back to Nork, which also has to be considered.
Oddly enough, food is very inexpensive, and both the US and Europe have perpetual enormous overstocks they could dump quickly, and would even save money, because warehousing it until it rots is expensive.
I find it funny that the author says it “could cause” a flood of refugees.
That’s like saying if the damn broke it could cause a flood of water to cross into the valley. Does he think there’s a slight chance that they will even stay in the hell of the North?
