On Thursday, General Motors announced an alert system under development that would instruct the Chevy Volt to charge only when a relatively high percentage of renewable energy was available. Being plugged in at those times would further minimize the carbon footprint of the plug-in hybrid.
When a substantial percentage of the energy transmitted to the grid came from a renewable source like wind power, OnStar would receive a signal from P.J.M. Interconnection, a company that manages the electric-power transmission grid for numerous utility companies. The telematics system would then cue the vehicle to begin charging.
This demonstration shows that in the near future customers will have a real signal of demand for renewable energy, Nick Pudd, OnStar vice president, said in a media release.
Solutions like this one will ultimately lead to increased renewable-energy generation, Mr. Pudd said.

Can you imagine only being able to fill up your vehicle when the government says that fuel is from an acceptable source?
Stop the tyranny!

What a useless crock of democrat monkey $h!+; having to charge for 12 hours for two hours driving is not going to be offset by these dumb "green" ploys.
The Volt is as dumb as it's benefactor, obama...neither can be taught anything without sucking dry everything around them.

Sounds like they are converting it to a single use vehicle.
Even if “green energy were 10% of the total output (not even close), it would take 80 hours to charge the car instead of 8!!!

Will the system also tell the car when to catch fire?

Once the government has perfected this technology, just think of all the progressive ways it will be applied to control every aspect of our lives.

Reminds me of a diving trip to Belize in 1979. Stayed in spartan conditions on Ambergris Caye, electricity was available every other day, community bread was baked on Wednesday and Saturday. The 2 telephones on the island usually worked, unless it rained.
This is a snap shot of the third world conditions the control freaks want to impose on us. We have to ‘save the planet’ you know.

That's a great illustration of the absurdity. It sounds like a bad joke - making modern automobiles as vulnerable to the elements as sail-powered vessels of centuries past. Sometimes, ships lay becalmed for so long that the captains would lower the boats and have the ships towed out of the floating heap of garbage, empty beef barrels and human waste that accumulated around the vessels' hulls.
Only now, two dozen men with oars can't render assistance. Yep, that really puts the progress in "progressive".
