No Murtha Ship!
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus plans to honor the late Congressman John Murtha by giving his name to the Navy's new LPD (Transport Dock Ship), to be launched in 2013.
In doing so, Sec. Mabus is breaking the Navy's tradition of naming its San Antonio-class amphibious transports after American cities. He is also honoring a man who:
We believe that such a man does not deserve to be honored by the U.S. Navy. If you agree, please help us petition Secretary Mabus to reconsider this outrageous decision....
Thank You!
Ty
Thanks for your post! Sending out another Freeper ping to help get more patriots to help us put a stop to this travesty! What a terrible slap in the face this would be to our brave Navy heroes!

Amphibious warfare, long considered a minor function by navies, assumed major importance in World War II. An entirely new "family" of ships and craft was developed for the massive landing operations in Europe and the Pacific. Many types of landing ships did not receive "word" names, but were simply known by their hull numbers (LST 806 and LCI(G) 580). Attack cargo ships and attack transports carried landing craft to put cargo and troops ashore on a beachhead. Many of these were named for American counties (Alamance [AKA 75]; Hinsdale [APA 120]). Some early APAs, converted from conventional troopships, kept their former names (Leonard Wood, President Hayes); many AKAs were named for stars (Achernar) or constellations (Cepheus). Dock landing ships, seagoing ships with a large well deck for landing craft or vehicles, bore names of historic sites (Gunston Hall, Rushmore). Modern LSDs are still part of today's Fleet, and carry on this name source (Fort McHenry, Pearl Harbor). After World War II the remaining tank landing ships (LST) were given names of American counties; thus, the hitherto-unnamed LST 819 now became Hampshire County (LST 819).
Somehow I don't see how SECNAV can violate these conventions to payback a fellow democrat. Freepers need to raise a stink.

Texas Freeper ping here. Let's stop this! Murtha's name should be banned from ANYTHING having to do with our military! God Bless our troops!
Ship namesakes for persons should go to ones awarded their service M.O.H. Today ship naming after persons is just a political rather than a traditional honoring process. From what I see Murtha had a Bronze Star was that even with a -V?
After the way he went after our troops...MAYBE a civilian garbage scow in NY harbor. Maybe.....
The “man” is a disgrace across the board.
Couldn’t they just name the head “the Murtha hole”?
Aren't they required to shave?
Lt.JG Mabius in 1972
After completing his TWO YEAR STINT in the Navy.
To be honest, that is the first picture I have ever seen of an active duty naval officer with a hippie beard.
Wasn't the Navy a clean cut operation during the Vietnam period?
Thanks for the ping. Murtha’s name shouldn’t be on anything but the inside of a public urinal fixture about waist high.
I posted this to several of my Facebook groups.
Thanks, PC!
(that's a restroom for you landlubbers. Shellback 1981)
The ship will not be named after him, just the anchor. The shipmates will salute each time it is dropped!
You mean all nine ships are already in service? Seems like just a couple of years ago I was at the commissioning ceremony of the first of the class, the San Antonio at Naval Station Ingleside. George H.W. Bush was there. Either the ship builders have been extremely busy, or that was longer ago than I thought.
Pretty sure that’s a Cruise Book shot from one of his Med cruises, not a formal pic. I also notice the jacket has no epaulets, and there’s no LtJg bars on his collar, leading me to believe that shot was either before or after his active duty phase, and a civilian with a hat.
My first cruise with WestPac in ‘65 were no beard affairs, those in ‘66 & ‘67 were allowed. While we could have beards in WestPac, once headed into CONUS had to be clean shaven again.
I used to post my ‘chicken laying an egg’ in response to that. LOL.
Thanks SS. I made that gif of Kerry pointing his finger at a Marine at the time it happened and have used it a lot. It never fails to anger people when they remember him doing that.
Murtha and Kerry are deserving of NOTHING.
[Thanks for your post!]
You’re very welcome and thank you!
