USN Reserve is a six year stint, with two years active duty besides any training duty required. OCS runs them through a shortened Middie school during their initial two to four year Reserve jaunt while in school getting a degree, then into the Fleet for two years and the balance as Inactive Reserve subject to Recall.Aren't they required to shave?

After completing his TWO YEAR STINT in the Navy.
To be honest, that is the first picture I have ever seen of an active duty naval officer with a hippie beard.
Wasn't the Navy a clean cut operation during the Vietnam period?

Pretty sure that’s a Cruise Book shot from one of his Med cruises, not a formal pic. I also notice the jacket has no epaulets, and there’s no LtJg bars on his collar, leading me to believe that shot was either before or after his active duty phase, and a civilian with a hat.
My first cruise with WestPac in ‘65 were no beard affairs, those in ‘66 & ‘67 were allowed. While we could have beards in WestPac, once headed into CONUS had to be clean shaven again.

CNO Adm. Zumwalt changed the reg to allow beards in the very early 70s.
