THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
JANUARY 24, 2012 By Bret Stephens
The GOP Deserves to Lose That's what happens when you run with losers.
Let's just say right now what voters will be saying in November, once Barack Obama has been re-elected: Republicans deserve to lose.
It doesn't matter that Mr. Obama can't get the economy out of second gear. It doesn't matter that he cynically betrayed his core promise as a candidate to be a unifying president. It doesn't matter that he keeps blaming Bush. It doesn't matter that he thinks ATMs are weapons of employment destruction. It doesn't matter that Tim Geithner remains secretary of Treasury. It doesn't matter that the result of his "reset" with Russia is Moscow selling fighter jets to Damascus. It doesn't matter that the Obama name is synonymous with the most unpopular law in memory. It doesn't matter that his wife thinks America doesn't deserve him. It doesn't matter that the Evel Knievel theory of fiscal stimulus isn't going to make it over the Snake River Canyon of debt.
Above all, it doesn't matter that Americans are generally eager to send Mr. Obama packing. All they need is to be reasonably sure that the alternative won't be another fiasco. But they can't be reasonably sure, so it's going to be four more years of the disappointment you already know.
Is this the best they can do?
As for the current GOP field, it's like confronting a terminal diagnosis. There may be an apparent range of treatments: conventional (Romney), experimental (Gingrich), homeopathic (Paul) or prayerful (Santorum). But none will avail you in the end. Just try to exit laughing.

Just go roll into the fetal position somewhere Mr Stephens. In the fight against creeping socialism guys like you are absolutely NO help at all.

Well, bully for you.
“Some people should perhaps consider reading the full article before commenting on it. In this case, the author positively nails Romney:”
Thank you.
As usual some freepers just read the title of a post and make all of their learned expert conclusions from that alone.
I posted the opinion article to stimulate some actual thought amongst most intelligent freepers instead of the usual and expected flame responses.
They don’t call the GOP the stupid party for a reason.
Mr Gingrich nailed it when he said,
I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office.
The calculating sychophantic media’s savage attacks, as well as the coordinated effots to overwhelm her with ethics charges on(as they did with Mr Gingrich) Mrs Palin quite possibly been the President.
But all the RINO’s are hollow. Christie loves sharia law, gun control and his historic gay appointments.
Mitch had nothing to say on the death of Osama bin Laden. Truly remarkable...does this guy even have a soul?
Nothing to say on any foreign policy issue. Truce on social issues. Oh and remember that the first thing ‘super fiscal conservative’ Mitch tried to do was to try to raise taxes. The legislature shut that down.
Jeb Bush. Yeah. Another Bush. OK who comes up with these ‘winners’?
The little bald dwarf with the personality of a mop bucket, that guy?
I haven't given up and none of the candidates are anywhere near the number of delegates to get the nomination. I just hope that there is someone out in GOP land who can ride in on a white horse and save the day or our Republic will have to endure another four years of Obama and may never in my lifetime recover its greatness or worse still becone a Marxist state.

Was it not for calculated sychophantic medias savage attacks, as well as the coordinated effots to overwhelm her with ethics charges on(as they did with Mr Gingrich btw) Mrs Palin would have quite possibly been our next President.
I read this last night and woke up thinking about it. I err worried that this is exactly what all the elitist neo - cons are thinking, the Republican establishment types, who have bought into the progressive big government mentality because they have no respect for average social conservative. They think that we need them more than they need us. They pretty much hate us.
Think about the fact that Romney turned to McCain’s debate coach for help last night. Then think about what the McCain staff said about Sarah Palindrome and you will know what direction Mitt is moving - It’s not to the right.
Did Mr. Stephens wake up this morning in William Kristol’s bed...with Bill next to him?
Let’s start a pool:
Who’s the next media-elite to call for the Romeny-Daniels switcheroo?
I call Krauthammer!
Calls renew for Mitch Daniels to enter presidential race
11:42 PM 01/22/2012
After the first three electoral contests for the Republican nomination have produced three different winners, some Republicans unsatisfied with the Republican field are calling for Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels to jump into the race.
An online petition for the Indiana governor to Run, Mitch, Run! launched at 8 p.m. Saturday evening, shortly after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was declared the winner of the South Carolina primary.
Over 1,000 people have since signed the petition to date.
“...the GOP the stupid party for a reason.”
Democrats play to win. The GOP “team” has nice uniforms, touts a good game plan, and plays by the rules but they fail to execute and rarely win the big games. They would rather look good on the field than do what it takes to win. The Dems play dirty and do not hesitate to engage in “unsportsmanlike conduct” to sideline the best GOP players. The refs are sympathetic to the Dems and turn a blind eye to their underhanded tactics. The bleechers on the Dem side of the field are filled with rabid fans that delight in taunting their opponents.
“..but he [gingrich] has baggage that the Obama smear machine would be happy to exploit..”
I think if anyone can take on the smear machine it is Gingrich. Lets not forget Obama has his own baggage. F&F,Solyndra ect..he has created massive debt and has little to show for it.
He is no longer the unknown interesting mysterious guy “with the big ears and funny name”
Not to mention the “blame Bush” bit isn’t going to have the punch it did.
Agreed! I should also add that I think who constitutes the “A-list” is a matter of perception. Another poster mentioned Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was hardly an “A-lister” in any sence of the term prior to taking office. But then the Republican Party was more of a movement-turned-party and probably wasn’t as concerned with personality & perception.
Possibly, but then we take the stance "The Country Be Damned"? and believe me, after another four years of the kenyan, it will be!
Nicely put. I assume you are talking about the financial can.
Newt-- he may be a narcissistic egomaniac and unable to control his schlong. But, at age 68, I think it quite possible that his schlong doesn't rule him the way it used to. And, wow, he does pump out great ideas! Even if he can only get a small fraction of them implemented, the country can move forward.
Mitt-- he may be a RINO. But even RINOs understand a healthy private sector is absolutely necessary to provide the revenues necessary to fund the nanny state. Giuliani, for all his faults, did a respectable job as mayor of New York. Romney is of the same mold.
Santorum-- he may be a long shot. But he voted with conservatives 88% of the time during his 14 years in congress. I find his occasional excursions into populist economic theory far less damaging than ObaMao's infatuation with social justice. Plus some of them are actually sensible-- such as increasing the tax deduction for a legitimate child so that it is at least on par with the government revenues flowing to an illegitimate child. Further, his blue collar roots and compassion are more likely to win votes in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania than an intellectual geek like Newt or a blue blood like Romney.
Ron Paul-- Yeah, he is as crazy as a sh*thouse rat when it comes to foreign policy. Isolationism is not a good long-term strategy. But if his domestic policy plans of reducing government drastically reach fruition, then we will get economic growth and be much more able to rebuild and rearm once isolationism has run its course.
ObaMao will do none of the above and, in fact, actively anything positive each of the four remaining contenders could actually bring to the office. That's the bottom line.
