On the Intellectual Inferiority of Liberalism
American Thinker ^ | January 23, 2012 | James Lewis

Liberalism used to be a respectable position for intelligent, well-meaning, and informed people. That was a long time ago. No longer.

Today the "liberal" faith requires an extraordinary act of ignorance, purposeful forgetting, and constant spinning. To be a faithful "liberal" today you have to forget the whole 20th century, and its 100 million victims of the radical left -- that is, victims of Obama's brand of leftism. You have to shut out of your mind the fact that Obama hails from today's Chicago Machine, the most storied and undemocratic political machine since Boss Tweed.

You have to ignore the bloody history of black nationalism in America, where Obama's hero Malcolm X was assassinated by the followers of Elijah Muhammed. You have to ignore the racial blackmail that has controlled American politics since the rise of the post-MLK "civil rights" movement, when all the heroic actions of a few civil rights campaigners like Martin Luther King, Jr., was taken over by dangerous racial demagogues like Rev. Al, the Rev. Wright and the radical left.

All those facts have to be sunk into your capacious black hole of memory, along with the history of the Soviet Union and its 100 million helpless victims. The Nazis only had 13 years to kill six million Jews, and even more Gypsies, homosexuals, Poles, democratic Germans, and of course, the religious. The Soviets and Chinese had seventy years or longer, and killed correspondingly more millions of victims with the same style of sociopathic control freakery. North Korea is the biggest Communist museum piece today, but nobody on the liberal side seems to take any responsibility for it -- just as they deny their alliance with Muslim fascists all over the world, who are agitating for another century of mass murder.

As Michael Ledeen recently pointed...

No you don't.

Many of today's liberals embrace the death toll of the last century, and consider it a good starting point for this century.

Some modern "Liberals" want to exterminate 90% of the human race, the survivors living in caves, foraging for roots and berries.

Others would be quite happy with many of us dead, the rest in chains, while they jet merrily between their dachas on Central Park West, Jackson Hole and Key West.

By the way, by some accountings it's closer to 200 million than 100 million.

A fascinating article, and thanks for posting. These are, of course, political labels that often obscure the direction of those so described. The author makes several points that could be rolled up into one, and it is this: what we used to know as liberalism has moved sharply to the left. Humphrey looked on Communism with horror, 0bama with approval. I do not say that last item lightly.

The distillation process has worked to move the people we're talking about from revolutionary action to revolutionary passion, to merely passion. They have incredible material possessions, they have given up God, and there is a void that they must fill with passion. And passion directed by the cynical is a powerful weapon.

It tends to be a little hard on the passionate, however, and they tend to be resentful if they ever do figure out that they've been used. But the thrust of the article is toward the failure of intellect, and that is precisely what happens when passion rules.

These aren't liberals, not really, not anymore by whatever criterion we use for that nebulous term, and the current fashion of relabeling them as "progressives" serves only to illustrate the point. Progress, toward what? Well, toward everyone feeling good. And death to anyone who makes them feel bad. That may be a lot of things, but intellect it is not.

Don’t forget - the “Progressive” movement of the early 20th century gave us Prohibition and Income Tax.

Excellent show on C-Span this morning covering the Conservative Black Forum in DC, moderated by Star Parker and including panelists like JCWatts, Reps West and Scott, and numerous black ministers, mayors, sheriffs et al - lots of discussion as to why blacks usually hold conservative views personally but go out and vote leftwing when it comes time to put values into action - “When you’ve heard that two and two make seven all your life, and finally hear that it actually makes four, it takes a while to sink in” is the way one panelist tried to explain the problem.....

Today self-labeled 'liberals' love mass murderers and those who justify mass murder: Karl Marx, the post-modern 'philosophers', the totalitarian left, Thomas Friedman, the New York Times and Islamic fascism. Like any utopian cult, these pseudo-liberals justify it all, not by the horrors of the past (which cannot be justified at all) but by some dream image of the future. The next time they'll get it right! Because they have good intentions, you see.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
- Ephesians 6:12

Where there's a shell, there's a way.

25 years ago, we had Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope.
Today we have Obama, no cash, and no hope!

If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.

Or you can get raw with these strings.

How about this gamechanger from America's Got Talent (which they SHOULD have won).

And finally, this, dedicated to the one and only rdb2, whose eyes are growing dim.

Either way, the violin is sweet yet LETHAL.

Do it!

There are two layers of liberalism.
Those you describe are the outright communists at the top who derive their power from exploiting the hangups of the “sheeperals” at the bottom.

The communists at the top sincerely hold it as a given that the world would be better off with a much lower population, if that remaining population were all communist and not “infected” with bourgeois tendencies, you know, like expecting compensation for effort.

Now the sheeperals are only driven by two things.

One is to feel good about themselves as “good people”. This is the pernicious lie of history and comes from the rejection of the truths revealed through Christianity.

The second motivating factor is to have the consequences of their behaviors paid for by someone else. Ironic, no? That’s exactly what Christ did.

You just described the outline for Zardoz. Boorman's future is more complex than that, but it looks like an agena-21 world, eveybody living in enclosed population centers except for a small population of savages paying tibute to the cities to be allowed to live.
By the way, by some accountings it's closer to 200 million than 100 million.
JPFO's "Innocents Betrayed" places the count closer to 300 million in the 20th century alone.

You are correct, of course. "Progressive", before it took on its Marxian cachet, meant someone who figured he had an idea of historical direction and that it was a political obligation to help/persuade/force his fellow citizens to pursue that direction. Government being coercion, this inevitably is more force than persuasion.

And yes, this led to Prohibition, whose apologists continue to this day to insist that everyone would be better off if they only obeyed the social vision of a few. In that sense progressivism was the enemy of liberty even before the Marxists hijacked it.
