U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

She has my best wishes. An injury like this takes years of recovery and she will never, ever be the same. My heart goes out to her and I admire her strength.
I feel a little creeped out by her “handlers” who, if for a minute, had the thought that she could hold office again. After this type of injury it is just not possible. Politics is a really cruel and sick game and I hope she goes on to enjoy the truly good things in life.
Free Republic needs a LIKE button. Spot on!!!
Godspeed in her recover from that vicious unprovoked attack by that rabid, deranged left-wing lunatic.
“How sad that a sick deranged left wing nut can end the career of one of the dwindling number of moderate democrats.”
She was my congresswoman, unfortunately. She’s about as moderate as Leon Trotsky.
You don’t sound like a dyed in the wool comservative to me if you’d vote for a dem out of sympathy. You realize that Giffords and her husband wrote that they were disappointed that “SarahPalin did not apologize for her part in the shooting”?
I wish her well in her recovery.
I am glad she will no longer be in congress.
Wishing Gabby a full recovery!
Don't you worry none... she will... and on your dime. See here.
Succinct and to the point, and it needs to be repeated over and over and over. And over. Until they finally hear it.
Prayers to Gabby for a good recovery. She has made amazing progress to this point and I hope it continues.
Yes there comments were unfortunate. But there are times in life, we cast partisan politics aside, and not pile on more misery by having her suffer an electoral loss in her own district. In the end one must balance the hurt and the gain. She’d likely to have won her seat anyway.
She is doing the right thing in stepping down.

Agreed
God bless her—she’s a trouper.
I wonder if her husband will run for her seat, now that he is retired from astronautism.
I commend her for finally doing right by her constituents.
We only have 4 safe seats out of the 9.
The 4th, were 1st district freshman Paul Gosar (wuss) is running
The 5th being vacated by Senator-Elect Flake
The 6th were freshmen Quayle and Schweikert are stuck together.
And the 8th (Trent Franks swapping district numbers with Giffords seat)
The competitive seats are
The 1st which freshman Gosar has fled for the safe 4th, the rat he beat is running again.
It is less Republican now, 51% McCain down from 54%.
The 2nd which is also less Republican down to a narrow Obama win
And the open new 9th in Tempe. 51 Obama to 47 McCain
The remaining 2 seats are safe rat, I guess Grijalva could be upset like he almost was in 2010 but I don’t think so.
What a clusterscrew. Why the hell does this state have an “independent” commission draw the lines and why the hell hasn’t the Republican legislature done something about it?
There should be 2 democrats from this state, 3 tops. They could get 5 of 9.
Sen. Tim Johnson D-SD to show the same
Exactly!!!
Lautenberg as well
