No candidate has won the GOP nomination for President without winning South Carolina since Ronald Reagan in 1980. But every one of those candidates who won had also won either Iowa or New Hampshire.
Were now confronted with a designated front runner, Mitt Romney, who got less votes in Iowa in 2012 than he got in 2008 and who lost South Carolina. His reason for being somehow remains that he is electable.
If you read a lot of the Republican commentary coming out of Washington even before the polls closed, suddenly South Carolina is irrelevant and the hick rubes of the Palmetto state are just petulant children.

That is exactly what is going on, and it is infuriating.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Red State pulling for mittens?

It means that more and more of us realize that RINOmney is a vapid dork.
Simple, isn’t it?
Clearly the South Carolina voters didn’t like the liberal media trying to manipulate them and use their power to defeat a conservative candidate they don’t like.
Red State was pulling for Perry. Erickson called on Perry to drop out and endorse Newt before that happened.
Here’s another great quote from this opinion piece:
“People are mad as hell they are about to be stuck with another boring, moderate, uninspiring choice that has at best a 50/50 shot at losing to the worst president since Carter. They are flocking to Newt not because they think hes a great guy, but because right now, hes the only one fighting for conservatism and GOP voters are looking for a vessel to channel their anger with Obama and their complete disappointment with the GOP establishment which is now embodied perfectly by Romney.”
Anybody should be able to beat Mr. Obama. Just as well that it be the most conservative individual we can get.
Mr. Obama stands reasonably accused of sacrificing American lives with Fast and Furious to shoe-horn a Gun Control issue into the ‘12 election cycle. And Mr. Obama is going to win the moral issue voters this cycle? Shirley, you jest.
Speaker Gingrich will confront Mr. Obama about his stonewalling the Fast and Furious subpoenas, AG Holder lying to Congress, and an Asst. US Attorney taking the fifth.
When the moderator breaks in to stop Speaker Gingrich from confronting Mr. Obama, Newt will cut the poor liberal flack off at the knees (metaphorically speaking). At that point Mr. Obama may very well start crying, and I want to see that. We could probably build a new veterans hospital from the proceeds if we put it on pay-per-view!!
Fast and Furious, Europe’s welfare economies going up in flames before our very eyes, Solyndra, the Muslim Brotherhood winning the Egyptian parliament, the Keystone pipeline, the NLRB in SC, Obama is a target rich environment for any candidate who can cut through the MSM/Obama campaign template. I’m betting that moral issue voters are going Republican this cycle. Can Newt win? Heck yes, in a landslide!
I don’t get the whole SC thing...isn’t that where Lindsey Graham keeps getting elected?
I stand corrected. I stopped reading Red State for quite some time, so I must admit I was not “in the loop”.
Sounds familiar!
"Some thoughts on those angry voters. Ask parents of any two-year-old and they can tell you about those temper tantrums: the stomping feet, the rolling eyes, the screaming. It's clear that the anger controls the child and not the other way around. It's the job of the parent to teach the child to control the anger and channel it in a positive way. Imagine a nation full of uncontrolled two-year-old rage. The voters had a temper tantrum last week....Parenting and governing don't have to be dirty words: the nation can't be run by an angry two-year-old."
-- ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings in his daily ABC Radio commentary, November 14, 1994, after Newt led the Republicans to control of the house for the first time in 50 years
That outdated one with the 28% favorable will have to do for some time.
That outdated one with the 28% favorable will have to do for some time.
He has a rather "flat", maybe even sociopathic personality. There's a "coldness" about him.
Sure, that's a step up from the President's narcissism but it's not enough to edge past Newt's ability to speak out.
Kind of like here in KY; the federal elections usually (not always) go Republican, but the state elections often go Democrat. I’ve lived here most of my life and I’m still trying to figure it out. The best I can come up with is “my daddy voted democrat, my daddy’s daddy voted democrat, so I’ll vote democrat”.
The only sections of South Carolina where Gingrich didn’t sweep were Charleston, Columbia, and their suburbs. These are areas with a lot of residents from the northeast. There are more such areas in Florida, where the next primary will be.
No he was for Perry.
