Well, I have to imagine that the stress he was under with this public scandal was not doing his health very much good. It’s a shame that this will always be associated with his legacy (you reap what you sow, but it’s a shame nonetheless).

RIP

The attitude of idolatry comes easy to some and blinds them to evil. This pos knew what was going on and did not one damned thing to stop it. I hope his time in hell is warm

as Mr Paterno is not law enforcement.

Mr Paterno wasn’t much of a man or this would have stopped as soon as he was informed.

He should have reported it to the police.

He should have fired McQueary for letting a child molestor continue his rape and escape with the victim.

He could have made some effort to find out if the victim was even still alive after being dragged away from the crime scene by the rapist.

He could have demanded that Sandusky be banned from all Penn State events, rather than seated on the dais with his boy victims, or in the president's box for football games.

He could have followed up with police to find out what their investigation revealed.

He could have shared the information he knew with the parents of every child he saw with Sandusky.

There are thousands of things he could have done, rather than tell his boss, witness the squashing of the story and do nothing.

Would you have done more? Would you have expected people you personally know and respect to do more? I would.

The desire to bring down good people comes easy to some and blinds them without knowing the facts.

‘He shouldn’t have gone to the local police with only a hear-say story.’

He should have drove the witness down to the police station, personally. Save that move, have the eye witness contact the police.

Portraying Paterno (i.e. God Incarnate on that campus) as essentially powerless when it comes to his staff is not accurate, I think. From what I heard he could have called for Sandy’s public execution on the 50 yard line, and it would have been carried out in minutes.

JoPa was a gutless jerk. If that’s brought to my attention, either me or Sandusky is going to get an asswhipping. The gutless one brushed it aside for his own ego. Good riddance JoPa

You do know that McQueary did not explain the details of what he "saw"? He "heard" things. You do know McQueary has told multiple stories? Should Paterno destroy a person based on McQueary's statement or should he turn it over to authorities? I would have done the same.

He was a great football coach, not a police detective. Should he have known how to conduct a police investigation? PSU police have jurisdiction. Paterno turned it over to the AD and the man in charge of PSU police. He could have told McQueary to say nothing; that would have been a cover-up.

See, that makes no sense. How is Paterno's ego helped by covering up for a guy who hadn't coached in 4 years? How does reporting it to PSU authorities cover up anything? Those that covered up were indicted.

You really would have acted as Paterno acted in the face of that sort of information?

Wow. I'm shocked that you would admit that.

He helped evil to thrive by being indifferent. Meh. I will studiously avoid all those who will talk about his greatness today. Coverups to protect an institution were not ok for the Catholic church but get to the men's institution of all holiness and a man who was simply good at his job, and suddenly he did everything right.

I would add to the above "deliberately indifferent". And indifferent to keep Penn State out of the news, more than likely.

Meh. Here's hoping the media can finally shut up about him before tomorrow.

Yes, I am in the habit of following the rules. He followed university rules. I am not a police officer. I too would have taken the witness to those in charge, assuming those in charge would do their jobs.

Since McQueary has told multiple versions, who knows what the truth is? I am afraid Sandusky will walk, just like Michael Jackson because of no credible witnesses. We'll see.

PSU high-ups: You're fired.

Joe: Fire me, will ya? A terminally ill man? Just give me a month, and I'll get the last laugh on all of you.

RIP Coach.

I'm sure your rule-following consistency would be a great comfort to the kid with the bleeding ass and his parents.

If he's ever found alive.

“I guess they wanted to make their political statement.”

A statement like this?

Child molestation is detestable & intolerable. Anyone who turns a blind eye toward it is at least partly responsible.

I have one question for all the sanctimonious Paterno defenders on this board: What if it was YOUR son in that locker room?

You mean the kid Paterno never saw? Should he be a police investigator or was it Shultz’s job to make sure an investigation took place? There is a reason Paterno didn't get charged. He did not see anything and reported it to those he was supposed to. He had NO authority over the ex coach and could have done harm to any investigation by inserting himself. I don't know why this is so hard for folks to understand; but I'm done.

Talk about sanctimonious. This is the type of argument liberals use when they can no longer discuss facts.
