Tunes For The Troops

RIP January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album, The Seven Year Itch.

She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

One of the greatest song writing teams of the Sixties was Hal David (lyrics) and Burt Bacharach (music). This is the Hal David and Burt Bacharach Songbook, Part 1.

David had been a journalist and lyric writer for bandleader Sammy Kaye, and Bacharach had been Marlene Dietrich’s musical director, when they met in 1957 at Famous Music in New York.

Their first success as a team came when Mitch Miller at Columbia Records handed a song of theirs to Marty Robbins. Miller produced, and Ray Conniff handled arranging and conducting honors. This is a good example of rockabilly. Catch that whistling hook! It was an auspicious start.

Thanks very much, Connie!

*HUGS*

Health is staying about the same- had a grueling PT session Wednesday night. Still having computer problems - was on the horn today for four hours with Verizon and Dell Tech Support - still not resolved. Using Mrs. MacNessa's laptop this evening. Have access to only a few graphics and most of them are old. Still, it's better than nothing.

How are things going with you this evening?

Here is Hal David’s story of their early collaboration.

We used to meet every day at Famous Music in New York. I’d come in with some titles and some ideas for songs, lines. Burt would come in with opening strains of phrases or what might be part of a chorus section. It was like Show And Tell: I’d show him what I had thought of, and he’d show me what he had thought of. And whatever seemed to spark the other would be the start of whatever song we started to write that day. I’d write four lines or sing lines of a lyric, and he’d have a melody, and very often we’d sit in the room and write the song together, sort of pound it out. I’d be writing lyrics, and he’d be writing music, and all of a sudden we’d have the structure of a song, which we'd keep working on. We didn’t write songs so quickly that they were done overnight or that day. I’d take home his melody, and he’d take home my lyrics, and so very often we’d be working on three different songs at one time.

Their second hit came in 1958 with Perry Como. This is a glimpse into college life in the Fifties when pleasures were simpler and mischief was minor. It’s quaint by today’s standards. Catch that bassoon line! You don’t hear that everyday.

Perry Como: “Magic Moments”
