David had been a journalist and lyric writer for bandleader Sammy Kaye, and Bacharach had been Marlene Dietrichs musical director, when they met in 1957 at Famous Music in New York.
Their first success as a team came when Mitch Miller at Columbia Records handed a song of theirs to Marty Robbins. Miller produced, and Ray Conniff handled arranging and conducting honors. This is a good example of rockabilly. Catch that whistling hook! It was an auspicious start.
Melting, swooning, input accolades here.....
Loved that collaboration! They truly did make beautiful music...IMHO! :)
Thanks for bringing them to us this week!
Good evening Sandy, G-Pa, Soutmaster! *Hugs*
How’s future eaglet master Nate doing? Oh...and you too?! LOL
We used to meet every day at Famous Music in New York. Id come in with some titles and some ideas for songs, lines. Burt would come in with opening strains of phrases or what might be part of a chorus section. It was like Show And Tell: Id show him what I had thought of, and hed show me what he had thought of. And whatever seemed to spark the other would be the start of whatever song we started to write that day. Id write four lines or sing lines of a lyric, and hed have a melody, and very often wed sit in the room and write the song together, sort of pound it out. Id be writing lyrics, and hed be writing music, and all of a sudden wed have the structure of a song, which we'd keep working on. We didnt write songs so quickly that they were done overnight or that day. Id take home his melody, and hed take home my lyrics, and so very often wed be working on three different songs at one time.
Their second hit came in 1958 with Perry Como. This is a glimpse into college life in the Fifties when pleasures were simpler and mischief was minor. Its quaint by todays standards. Catch that bassoon line! You dont hear that everyday.
I suddenly feel like hanging ten Miss Cindy!:) LOL
Thanks for all the great tunes for Troops & wishing you a loverly weekend! *Hugs*
