t was every man and crew member for himself. Survivors from the Costa Concordia spoke angrily yesterday of the nightmare evacuation from the stricken ship as women and children were left behind. In the terrifying moments after the giant vessel began to list, fights even broke out to get into the lifeboats. Men refused to prioritise women, expectant mothers and children as they pushed themselves forward to escape. Crew ignored their passengers leaving chefs and waiters to help out.

As close as they were, they could have back stroked it.

But it was 9 PM and dark. Not sure if they could tell which way to swim.
Captain Schettino might as well change his name to “Schett” - what a mess! ;-)
People will still try. I used to work for lawyers. In that profession anything is possible.
And even without litigation, the bad publicity will sink Costa. Unfortunately, it will probably spread to other cruise lines as well.
Most passengers were 65+ years old. Just how much climbing do you think they can do...in the dark...with the ship tilted like that.
Not all women and children are feminist... maybe those who are should self identify before they go on a cruise...
Run a rope from the ship to the breakwater. Good swimmers could assist the elderly.
I know three couples who were on cruise ships when the ships dramatically 'tilted'. (two separate ships)
I read the article and a 5 month pregnant woman was denied entry to a lifeboat by the captain (or maybe one of the crew) so that he could get on.
“What your missing is the difficulty just getting off the ship!!”
Why get off. It’s aground. Stay where you are and wait for help.
I saw a lawyer who specializes in maritime law on FNC the other day. IIRC, due to the contract the passengers accepted when purchasing their tickets and a couple of treaties, passengers are pretty well screwed when it comes to litigation. Folks should do some homework before taking a cruise.
It was a full moon and the ship was VERY close to shore. Seeing (and hearing) the shore would not have been a problem. And for any healthy swimmer, neither would swimming to it have been. The problem would have been getting out of the rooms and to a location on the ship which would have allowed reasonable access to the sea, or swimming while injured or elderly.
Sure, they were all abandoned, but stories have also highlighted the fact that men were jumping in lifeboats ahead of women and children, and that is why there’s a connection.
Okay. I wonder about being able to locate the island by hearing, though, as I am sure there was lots of yelling going on.
What a scene it must have been. I hope I never have to go through such an experience.
I’d say that was more a breakdown in moral fiber of men than anything else. Buy you’ll probably blame that on women too. Just like in the middle east.
Since you appear to be a mind-reader, I don’t see any point in responding.
