GREENVILLE, S.C. - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum sharpened his messages of populism and electability in South Carolina Saturday morning, saying "the grandson of a coal miner" is better equipped to relate to blue-collar voters in swing states than "a Bain executive."
As Santorum's adversaries in the GOP field - particularly former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry - have attacked front-runner Mitt Romney's record at the private equity firm Bain Capital, Santorum has taken a pass, repeatedly saying he would not attack the capitalist system.
Then today, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania struck the theme that his background and upbringing make him more appealing to the parts of the country hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs. Those areas of the country, Santorum added, are swing states up for grabs in the general election......
......Santorum's got company - many of his other rivals are pushing the same message to South Carolinians in advance of its January 21 primary.
It was a markedly class-based argument for a candidate who frequently attacks the Obama administration for waging class warfare.
But it was also softer in tone than the criticism Gingrich and Perry have heaped on the former Massachusetts governor for his work at Bain, such as Perry's use of the term "vulture capitalist" to describe Romney.

I doubt it. Not as long as Rick ensures their guy wins the nomination.
What a pathetic lot we have running for leadership of the free world.

Greenville will eat that up.

Attack Mitt Romney on all social issues where Mitt is to the left of conservatives, and attack Mitt Romney on all past, present, and future problems with RomneyCare! Mitt Romney will lose, if his full non-conservative record is exposed and if all problems related to RomneyCare are exposed.
This Romney-fest is like what CA went through with Schwartzenegger.
We had to learn the hard way. So will America if Romney wins.
I lived in Greenville, and have lots of family there.
It is Newt country right now. All of upstate is.
I’m coming to the conclusion, that the average voter doesn’t really care about, nor understands RomneyCare and what not. That issue has been out there for a long time now, and only the politically literate are persuaded by it.
Whereas pettier issues, such as Romney being a disconnected business exec, putting his dog on top of his car, etc. resonate stronger with your typical know-nothing voter.
They need the three conservatives in it till SC primary day to help their belove Mittens.
BUT I THINK Newt still takes SC despite the conservatives splintering the vote, and then the question is — will Perry and Santorum do the RIGHT thing of stepping down IN UNITY to give their fellow conservative, Speaker Newt a one-on-one matchup with Willard the Lib in Florida?
Or will Fox persuade otherwise?

I was thinking more in terms of taking Willard down to single digits in those parts of SC - helping Newt eke out a win statewide. :~)
(Btw, sorry for the double-double posts)
oops ~ misspelled Schwarzenegger
RomneyCare’s mandates, exchanges, costs, waiting times, choice, and subsidies = ObamaCare’s intrusive mandates, big government exchanges/death panels, much higher costs, longer waiting times, fewer choices, and federal subsidies
The main differences? $50 subsidized abortions and the public option are only SPELLED OUT in Willard and Teddy Kennedy’s concoction.
Obama will bury Flopney on this issue.
Of course it is! It was Huck country in ‘08! : )
Nah, that’s just a Dem talking point to eat at the Republican base. No Democrats care and most independents understand the difference between state and federal requirements.
Obama said Obamacare is based on Romneycare to suppress Republican voters in November. He doesn’t actually BELIEVE it..it’s all political talking points.
As far as that goes, it's probably a valid point.
I would urge Rick to lay off the Bain comments though. If you're desperate enough to go beyond this, it's self-destructive IMO.
As long as Capitalism exists, there will either be Bains out there cleaning up the mess, or there will be total loss in every instance when businesses are failing.
Some businesses can't be turned around. Someone needs to swoop in, buy up, and do what they can to turn it into as positive an outcome as there can be.
This is not the road to taking Romney down.
It's actually the no longer viable Gingrich and Perry and that are handing it Romney but don't let facts get in your way.
