Actor Gene Hackman, 81, was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami on Friday after a car struck the bicycle he was riding in Islamorada, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Hackman was heading southbound near the 88 mile marker on the Old Highway around 3 p.m. when struck from behind by the right front fender of a 2007 Toyota Tundra driven by Kathryn Rodriguez, 60, or Islamorada, FHP Sergeant Thomas E. Pikul said.

Riding a bike in Florida is dangerous because most of the population is grey haired and barely able to see over the steering wheel...
By the way, here are some typical bicyclists that I’ve seen.

They almost ALL do stupid crap like this. And then they wonder why they get hit. Note: Videos not shot from an SUV.
Even after I came to a screeching halt, they STILL tried to cross in front of me and in the face of another oncoming car.
I wish Gene Hackman would come out of retirement also. He is one of my all-time favorites. The first movie I remember him being in was Bonnie and Clyde. He was great as Buck Barrow but I thought the woman who played Blanche Barrow stole the film. I hope he has a complete recovery.
My first thought after reading these comments is, how sad. A great actor has been hurt and all I see are idiotic put downs on SUVs, the elderly, gas usage, and bicycle on roads.
Good show there!
Well you have to buy your gas.
They make you pre-pay.
It is against the law in most places to ride your bikes on the sidewalk. It is likely he was on the shoulder of the road if there was one... When passing a cyclist the standard is give 3ft of clearance if you must pass. Cycling is BIG in Florida and especially in communities that are considered retirement or vacation communities. There are bike lanes everywhere.
What concerns me, as a law abiding cyclist... is that certain folks are really hostile...even if we’re riding in a wide shoulder/bike lane. Some drivers intentionally come close, honk horns, yell out the windows and are generally miserable a-holes to the cyclists. I’ve considered just getting a helmet-cam to get their license plates.
Cudo’s for Hackman for exercising in his senior years. I ride with some guys in their 70’s and they are awesome, long time cyclists.
I am wondering what an 81 year old is doing on a bicycle riding on the highway anyway.
See post 42. I think the Lycra cuts off circulation to their brains.
That would be a Toyota Sequoia, I believe.
I thought he lived in Santa Fe? He used to eat at Harry’s
Roadhouse on Old Santa Fe Trail.
I have (or had, until it was destroyed in a recent accident) a helmet cam for use on my motorcycle. I record every ride and post up the highlights (or low-lights, as it were) of stupid drivers, riders, rare or cool vehicles, etc., etc.
Want to know who I see casually breaking traffic laws en masse the most, per capita? Bicyclists.

Changes in latitude...... changes in attitude
It’s a total party-island. Used to be huge for the college/party crowd when I would go. The most prayers I’d expect were to ward off hangovers, bedbugs and the crabs...
I think that if 90% of Hollywood actors got struck by cars and didn’t survive it would be a good thing for America.
Yes, built on the Tundra platform.
That’s not a tundra....
