SC Sources: Gingrich Could Endorse Santorum

While Newt Gingrich campaign staffers are calling such talk premature, there are indications that should the former House Speaker bow out of the GOP race, he would throw his support behind rising Rick Santorum in a last-ditch effort to stop frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Multiple South Carolina sources affiliated with Santorum's campaign said Gingrich's campaign has contacted Santorum's campaign to discuss endorsing the former Pennsylvania senator should he drop out.

One source, speaking to Patch on the condition they not be identified, paraphrased Gingrich's stance as delivered by high level campaign staff this way: "If it can't be me, I want it to be Rick Santorum.""

Gingrich is looking at finishing as low as fifth place in New Hampshire and is currently polling at under 20 percent (good for third place) in South Carolina, according to rolling averages from Real Clear Politics.

Still, high-ranking officials within Santorum's South Carolina campaign don't foresee Gingrich stalling out before the primaries in the Palmetto State, where he once commanded an imposing lead in the polls.

There was no “try.” I voted for Newt yesterday and met him outside the polling place. My first impression of him in person was that he seemed tired. His wife surprised me. She comes across much better in person than what you see on camera.

I’m sure they’re all tired, but I walked away from the meeting thinking that Newt needed to get some rest in order to keep giving it his all. I want him to stay in, because I don’t see how Santorum will excite many voters and build momentum. Rick doesn’t inspire me.

This may be a superficial comment, but I can’t watch Huntsman anymore. Notice how many times he licks his lips during an answer. I counted 12 in one 1 minute debate answer. It’s just “lick my lips and tell you why you’re stupid.”

It is really blowing my mind how so many people don't understand the difference between true capitalism and CRONY CAPITALISM! The American people (left and right) are SICK of the power brokers in the country, and all around the world, gaming the system to cement their power base and get whatever they can get, and it doesn't matter if they take us down while they are at it. What has been happening the last 50 years, at least, with our financial institutions, our “investment” class (derivatives, CDO’s, subprime loans, etc) is NOT capitalism.
Newt was on MSNBC yesterday with Scarborough and he gave a VERY good explanation why he is going after Romney on Bain. Romney should be vetted NOW about Bain, because I guarantee you that the media and the Democrats are going to hit him HARD about it. And what they bring out is going to be a lot worse than what we have heard so far.

This is spin from Santorum’s people, not Newt’s. What is more interesting here is that pro-Romney Fox News pushed it on F&F this morning.

The fix is in for Mitt, and the Fox is also in for Mitt.

That is all.

me too.
It would bring the conservatives together , smash out the RINO and the nutjob and we would have a true conservative with another conservative who knows DC and is not afraid to go after this bias liberal media and zero.

He has spent the last week telling us how Romney is an evil capitalist?

So you think there's no such thing as an "evil capitalist"? All capitalists are just perfectly saintly? Sounds like some commentators who apparently have a weak sense of right and wrong as long as money is being made.

Well, what Romney did was perfectly legal, you say? So is the "insider trading" done by Congress on information they receive because of their positions. Positive law at best is only an approximation of natural law; at worst, it bears no relation to it.

I think the point Newt is grasping toward is more like Codevilla's conflict between the Ruling Class and the Country Class -- Mitt is just as much as Ruling Class type as Obama, with as little concern for personal freedom.

I don't understand why none of the Republican candidates have shared at all Ron Paul's views on personal freedom, which I think resonate with a lot of people, and should resonate with conservatives.

It will be interesting to hear what Newt has to say. Regarding him dropping out and endorsing Santroum, I think it is a bit early for that and I hope Newt does not do that.

Oh, wait, that is NOT all. Almost forgot:

One of the pro-Newt PACs just got the first $5 Million of what will be a $20 Million contribution from a longtime Newt donor in Vegas.

If you were a candidate with a fresh $5 mil in the bank and the promise of $15 mil more on the way, would you or your staff be talking about supporting another candidate in any way, shape or form?

No way.

republicans should decide, not the kooks, the Dems or nonparty which really means they couldn’t careless about politics and only vote on big elections.

close all primaries, and allow only republicans to run on the republican ticket , meaning Paul should be running on the libertarian ticket as he is not a republican.

The GOP could have fixed this 3 years ago and never, instead we allow a north east state which then allows anyone to vote in it.
SC needs to close their primary too like we have here in FL.

Let’s not play main stream media here people and say that the primaries are all over. Mittens did not do well in NH. Yes he won but he did not get 50% of the vote. He was supposed to absolutely trounce people there.

PLUS NH was an open primary and Democraps cross over to screw up the voting....

Seriously, this is NOT over. Remember McCain {yuck} came out of nowhere last year.

“I don’t think so.

Santorum is the one who is headed for an exit.”

The problem with Gingrich supporters is they fail to see that he is absolute toast in the general. He has enough baggage to sink a battleship, and a horrible likability/charisma factor. If you think the Dems are salivating over a Plastic Mitt candidacy, they are ten times more in favor of a Newt candidacy. You’ll note the press is being awfully kind to old Newt these days...so far.

I’m sure Newt realizes this, and will drop out soon no matter how he’s doing in the primaries. He might win the battle of the nomination, but he knows he’d lose the war of the general election.

Rick Santorum at least has a fighting chance, and in the subpar field this cycle he’s the last man standing as far as being an acceptable conservative choice.

FOX has been pushing for Romney since day one as like the other MSM.

Socially liberal, north east boy really and all about their ratings and pockets and to hell with other issues.

After being up in the north east for some time then I really do feel that I am in another country.

One guy this morning said the MSM is biased because they try and embarrass republicans about social issues.
Well if they got out of their elitist circles and got out of the north east they would understand all the country besides the west coast is for normal marriage, normal up bringing for children etc

It goes to show that those who move and stay and work in the north east for some time or many who come from there have no clue about the rest of America.

The “King of Bain” movie is supposed to come out today.

Todd Palin endorsed Newt a few days ago.

What if his announcement today is ... Sarah will be campaigning with him, pushing the crony capitalist meme.???

I can dream, can’t I? If she wants her endorsement to matter, she’d better do it soon.

I heard from a source at the Gingrich campaign that Santorum is going to bow out later this week and endorse Gingrich!

It’ll be a great thing, too! Now Conservatives can all rally behind Newt and beat Romney!!!!

Santorum is as exciting as watching paint dry. He’s a nice guy and I like his views but he will NOT be the conservative rep for us. Newt is articulate and persuasive and is MY choice. Santorum should be the one to exit NOW.
