Romney rolls out former Vatican envoys' endorsement

Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney, a Mormon facing doubts about his conservative credentials, said Saturday he had the endorsement of five former US ambassadors to the Vatican. Romney's campaign unveiled a letter from the ex-envoys hours before a debate in which he was to face off against his rivals, including Catholics Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, who have cast him as a weak-kneed moderate. The former ambassadors said they were "united" behind Romney "because of his commitment to and support of the values that we feel are critical in a national leader" and "experience, vision and commitment to the common good." The group included Thomas Melady, Raymond Flynn, James Nicholson, Francis Rooney, and Mary Ann Glendon, who served under both Democratic and Republican presidents as envoys to the Holy See.

Ray Flynn helped Clinton get elected.

Jim Nicholson is an establishment Republican.

Never heard of the others.

And Huntsman was Ambassador to China, it didn’t make him Chinese. (Well maybe a little!)

This might of had some weight if they were envoys from the Holy See and not just American recipients of political favor who were named envoys to the Holy See. The Vatican might not have liked any of them, we don’t know.

All five of them should be excommunicated.

They support a man for president who belongs to a cult
that mocks the Holy Bible and believes some character
named Joe Smith sits at the right hand of God.

I have a problem with faiths that call themselves Christian, but mocks the Bible and does not believe in the Trinity, and also believes some character named Joe Smith sits at the right and of God. I just described the whacky ANTI-CHRISTIAN
Church of Ladder Day Saints (popularly called Morman Church).

They are also the most racist religion in the United States and would not allow black men in the priesthood until 1978.

They think blacks are cursed by having the blood of Cain.

Raymond Flynn is a conservative Republican?

LoL, considering he's only made donations to Democrats, and supported Hillary in 2008 with his money..of course, he's a Republican.

Interesting overtones at play here... looks like Romney is making a play for the Catholic while the "Catholic" vote Gingrich was out kissing evagelical protestant butt. And the kicker is the "evangelicals" in Iowa went for the lifelong devout Catholic Santorum instead. I'm still laughing at that one, it reminds me of the Orthodox Jews in Weiner's district who shunned the liberal Jew in favor of a pro-Israel Roman Catholic.

Listening to some of the Mormon freepers, it seems they (and Romney) think Catholics empathize with Mormons since the media is always going on about how "evangelicals" don't consider Mormons to be Christian. What the Mormons don't realize is that nobody in the Catholic church considers Mormons to be Christian either (nor do Orthodox Christians or mainline protestants, in spite of the fact the media only talks about "evangelicals")

Conservative Catholics would probably be inclined to vote for a Mormon candidate if the candidate had a strong record of socially conservative policies. Most of the time this is easy to come by, as Mormons tend to be very socially conservative and many times vote to the right of Catholics. For example, Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz is a Mormon and I have no doubt most of the freepers in Santorum's camp would support him in a heartbeat if he ran for higher office. The problem is both of the Mormon candidates for President do NOT have a conservative track record. Touting endorsements from establishment Republicans who served as Ambassador to the Vatican won't solve that, anymore than liberal Jews will vote for a conservative because he was endorsed by the former Ambassadors to Israel.

Mitt would probably crack 40% in MA but that’s about it.

Flynn had a national radio show when I was a kid. My mom would listen to it while she drove us to school.

Pro-life socialist. At least he’s not for Obama.

“Mitt would probably crack 40% in MA but that’s about it.”

Ehhh...40% might be high. No way he wins the state anyway.

“Pro-life socialist.”

Good synopsis - very accurate!

There was a poll several months ago and it was Obama over Romney 53-40.

McCain got 36% and Bush got almost 37% against Kerry who was from the state. Not far to go to get to 40.

Zero chance of winning of course (he would have lost in 2006 even against Patrick). Reagan probably couldn’t win it today.
