Live thread to cover today's GOP caucus. News, predictions, opinions, totals, and the like.
Will be heading out about 4 pm or so to get our site ready and do a final review with the precinct chairs. I expect it to be bigger than 2008 with very heavy turnout and we are preparing for that.
We are also ready for disruptions. They simply won't be tolerated. The state party sent us a memo saying if there's any trouble call the cops immediately. Anyone trying to cause problems is going to get a rude awakening.
My predictions of the outcome are a narrow field with about a 10 point spread for the top five with Bachmann far behind in single digits:
Santorum - 24 Romney - 22 Paul - 20 Perry - 17 Gingrich - 14 Bachmann - 4 The Rest - 1
Think things are still in flux and many won't decide till right to the wire, so I'm not terribly confident of any predictions.
5th and 6th place candidates are dead in the water tonight, I’m afraid..

Go Santorum 24%+!!! Good for 1st
Go Newt 14%+!!! Good enough for 4th
Perry 9% and Michele 6% drop out Wednesday :(
I don’t know Nutmeg I hearing more stuff on Twitter news
cnnbrk CNN Breaking News
Next wave of Iowa entrance poll results: Paul 24%, Romney 23%, Santorum 19%, Gingrich 13%. #CNNElections http://on.cnn.com/xJwA8o
As one of said young people, I agree. Many people my age are politically incompetent and largely amoral.
That’s one way of seeing it.
Another way of looking at it is that old people support foreign wars (1) who (like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum) are not going to volunteer to fight those wars and (2) don’t expect to pay for those wars.
OTOH, the people who are being saddled with foreign wars, who are being saddled with the national debt, who are being saddled with illegal aliens, who are being saddled with the welfare state, who are being saddled with TSA, who are being saddled with the terrible economy which is caused by taking money out of the private sector to be spent on various forms of welfare like “No Child Left Behind” ... those people are not happy with the status quo.
Those people are voting for a guy who would completely abolish Social Security and Medicare and the EBT card and TANF welfare and Medicaid.
Oh how I would love that to be the result!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Care to explain why you’d love it that RUPaul come in 2nd ?
And Romney 3rd ?
curious..........
Ron Paul leading in three countys on this site:
I don’t get it either. Heard earlier that last election Iowa media blasted him as a faux conservative, anti-conservative, barely Republican, but that DID NOT happen this time. Curiously enough.
I figure Romney must have the money to shut some people up this go. What other explanation can I come up with?
Yikes!
DAMMIT!!! We are retired after YEARS of paying through the nose for YOUR grandparent’s SOCIAL SECURITY and MEDICARE for YEARS, and YEARS, and YEARS . . THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of dollars for taxes to fund YOUR government EDUCATION, and your parent’s government EDUCATION.
We did NOT complain then about all those lovely THOUSANDS of dollars the government TOOK from our paychecks in order to bankroll you and YOUR forebears’ ENTITLEMENTS.
So, SHUT UP and MAN UP LIKE WE DID!!!
Horrible. I feel for you. Ads are sickening.
I am praying mightily for Newt Gingrich to win in Florida.
You are right about Iowa being nothing. Now that Bachmann is dead last she will really vie for a position with Romney. Watch out Newt and Perry. The media wants us to believe that after Iowa and NH...it’s over for the other candidates...but Newt is going to come back in the south. Shame about Virginia....Romney gloating like the cat that swallowed the canary. God help me..I detest him now more than ever after the Iowa debackle and dirty tricks. DISGUSTING MAN
Hope you’re wrong, don’t want to see Perry drop out.
If Bachmann continues to poll low, you would think her support will go to Santorum if they are trying to switch to the winning horse.
GREAT!! NO FOX tonight! I agree with another poster who said on site news is always better done by CNN, not that I am watching them either, but FOX needs a bruise from the troops.
The military does absolutely everything BUT “provide for the common defense.” It provides for the “common defense” of South Korea and Lithuania and France, but not Alabama, Arizona, and Texas which have been invaded by millions of illegal aliens.
Hey, if you want to “provide for the common defense,” you can start by BANNING Muslim terrorists from coming here legally! Until then, no one who talks about the need to “provide for the common defense” can be taken seriously.
How did the 9/11 terrorists come here? They walked through the front door. Just like the millions of illegal aliens in this country who overstayed their visas.
no you got it wrong, I’m young and served in battle and I think Paul is a nut.
He is more liberal than liberals on social and certain international , military issues, hell the man said he would get rid of the CIA, FBI in the 2008 debate and obviously some young think making all drugs legal, having sex with anything and marrying anything is top of their list.
Again Paul should run on the libertarian ticket to spew his crap and his supporters the nutters need to understand sites like this and the republican platform is not a libertarian liberal one.
Of course those people only are wanting to get high and have sex with a donkey or their sibling
It's pretty obvious, isn't it? I'd like to see Romney be diminished by both a real conservative (Santorum) and nutcase RuPaul.
“I am praying mightily for Newt Gingrich to win in Florida.”
If Newt wins South Carolina he has a good chance in Florida. GO NEWT!
Just returned from my causus, Cedar Rapids, Linn County (CR 30).
Just as I predicted, big numbers for Romney. 195 votes, here are the counts and rough percents:
Romney - 79, about 39 percent
Paul - 40, about 20 percent
Santorum - 38, about 19 percent
Perry - 18, about 9 percent
Newt - 14, about 7 percent
Huntsman - 4, about 2 percent
Bachmann - 1...about 1/2 a percent...
There was 1 other vote, I didn’t catch it...sorry.
Only prepared speeches were Paul and Santorum, another guy spoke for Newt when no one else had signed up. No other candidate had a representative.
Last time around, my former neighbor (and, at one point, maybe still, the head mormon dude in the area) spoke for Mitt. He was there tonight, but didn’t speak for him.
But he had the troops out in force...(and I know ‘head mormon dude’ isn’t the correct title, no offense intended, I just don’t remember his title).
Just back from my caucus, I didn't stick around for the platform discussion. So you know my precinct, in 2000 it went about 45% for Forbes, 25% for Bush, and the rest, the rest. In 08, I think Huckabee got 65 or so votes, Romney and Paul tied with about 28 votes, and the rest the rest.
Smaller turnout tonite, but my above guess while I was watching was pretty close.
My precinct quantity of votes: Paul 36, Santorum 35, Newt 18, Perry 16, Mittens 12, Bachmann 5, Huntsman 5.
