(AP)WASHINGTON Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.
"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.
Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.
State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.
Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

Those 15000 signatures need challenged. No way that many (even dead people) liked Obama in Va.
From what I read somewhere the Virginia Lieutenant Governor personally had a hand in submitting Mitt's paperwork and signatures.
I had thought he was a good Conservative but now I have grave doubts about him.
Face it, we have no choice in this election. Romney will be our candidate which, in turn, leads to an Obama win.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and win both the house and the senate keeping them for the next 4 years. Hey, I can dream can’t I.
He is. Just ask him.
Who do you champion?
Apparently theres some kind of technical requirement that VA claims is important - addresses so signers can be verified - sounds reasonable enough. How is VAs method so different from the other states that it catches everybody by surprise?
Look at it like this: Virginia is where federal bureaucrats go home to sleep. They know who signs their inflated paychecks.
I’ll tell you what’s pissing me off. Why is the News Media, FReepers and the blogs all saying “Newt and Perry” didn’t make the ballot? The fact is, Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman, Gingrich, and Perry ALL didn’t make the ballot. And I’ll happily tell you why they are only referencing two...because if you focus on all five , then the STANDARD becomes the story instead of Perry and Newt and the quest to make them appear incompetant.
Something seems amiss in Virginia. I’m beginning to think a brokered GOP convention will lead to the best outcome.
Considering the number of candidates who WON’T be on the Virginia ballot, it sounds like the state’s requirements may result in most of the candidates ignoring Virginia and the issues it cares about.
Shooting themselves in the foot?
I guess they are all going to add millions more to they’re income before they are stopped.
But hey let’s all fight that Gingrich is a good guy or that any of them are but maybe Bachmann, possibly Santorum and Perry.
Huck is a Ron Paul supporter.
You hit this squarely on the head as well as a Saturday news dump on Christmas eve.Nothing to see here move along...
Well, no:
The failure of Bachmann, Huntsman and Santorum was reported earlier. Perry next, now Gingrich. They’re all getting space as the news is released.
As I understand it, the difference between Bachmann-Huntsman-Santorum and Gingrich-Perry is that the former didn’t even turn in signatures. Gingrich and Perry did, but came up short.
Sounds like Virginia’s bar is too high.
Oh, ok, so Huck isn't liberal.
He's nucking futs.
It’s a simple solution really:
If you can write-in a candidate, write them in.
If not, everyone who supports Perry, Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrich, or Huntsman should vote for Paul in VA to deny Mitt ALL of the delegates.
Virginia is winner-take-all. If Paul ins VA, Mitt gets no delegates there and it is a major FAIL!
If these guys can’t even manage to get their paperwork in to get on the ballot, how are we suppose to trust them with our vote to run this nation?
And what is so sad - the ones that DID get their ballot filings done - are absolutely undesirable.
Ladies and Gentlemen - the USA is officially screwed.
It's been reported that it was due to lack of addresses for Newt, don't know about Perry. No further details are known at this time. Whether these were largely from one region or dispersed over all districts, whether someone could have deliberately sabotaged the effort (as has been suggested) is unknown. Of course sabotage rarely happens(we hope).
The other candidates (Bachmann etc)did not even submit signatures. I don't know if they just decided not to submit signatures because they had less than 10,000, or some other reason.
The 2 people who qualified (Romney and Paul)have had previous attempts at running and no doubt knew to take advantage of the 15,000 rule. Since they submitted more than 15,000 signatures they were exempt from verification of things such as addresses, and their qualification is deemed rather than verified.(these rules apparently were well known in advance).
