Republican elder statesman and former Senate leader Bob Dole on Sunday endorsed Mitt Romney to be the Republican presidential nominee, a day after the former Massachusetts governor received the backing of Iowa's main newspaper.
In an open letter to Iowa voters, Dole - himself a former presidential candidate - said a great deal was at stake on January 3, when Iowa votes in the first nominating contest for the 2012 presidential election.
"A number of my friends are currently candidates seeking the GOP nomination. But the time has now come for us to decide who among them can defeat Barack Obama in 2012. I've made my decision, and I believe our best hope lies in Governor Mitt Romney," Dole wrote.
"As President, Mitt Romney will succeed in turning this country around," he wrote. "He rescued a flailing Winter Olympics when it was mired in financial scandal. He was an exceptional Governor of Massachusetts, who managed to both balance the state's budget and cut taxes while dealing with an overwhelmingly Democratic state legislature."
Though Dole's endorsement is not much of a surprise this election cycle, he went a different route in 2008 when Romney made his first bid for the nomination. Four years ago Romney got in some hot water when he said that Dole - who had written a letter supporting eventual Republican nominee Senator John McCain - was the last person he would want a letter from.

Oh Boy ! All he needs is for Joe Lieberman to endorse him so some of his “Joementum” rubs off on him and makes him even more spiffy to those swinging wild and crazy young voters. ( sarc off )....
That should be the kiss of death for Romney.
All he needs is McCain to Endorse him and that will whip us all into a frenzy like we haven't seen since Pat Boone was rocking the airwaves with his swinging toons....
Will someone hand me one of those little blue pills, I can't take all this excitement...
Now if only we could get the ghost of Gerald Ford to speak up.
Birds of a feather et all.
The establishment is closing ranks. But I won’t vote for Romney in the primary, even if I have to cast a protest vote for a long-shot. Romney may be the nominee, but not with my help.
Should respect be given to Benedict Arnold who was severely wounded and a war hero?
It’s amazing what they can do with animatronics these days. Bob Dole almost seems alive...
Well that does it then...If Bob Dolt supports Romney, I have no choice but to vote for him...
He became a politician.
This is huge! An endorsement from President Dole is a highly coveted thing. Go Mitt!!! (sarc)
Kiss of death
One Marxist globalist RINO stooge graces another with a vote of confidence.
What an UNsurprise.
I appreciate all who serve in uniform, but heck, military service isn't restricted to patriots and conservatives. Plenty of liberals have served, including my nutjob progressive brother, and Charlie Rangel.
I appreciate his wartime contribution, but Bob Dole is a RINO.
I never said agree with him, I said show some respect and not count the days until he dies. I do not understand why it is so hard to be classy.
Bob Dole a RINO?
Square that with his ACU rating of 82.
82 is not that high of a score for an ACU rating. It is just a tiny bit higher than John McCain and Ron Paul’s score.
How much did Newt pay him?
The last thing Mittens needed was an endorsement from another loser who felt it was “his turn” to be President.
If Viagra Bob really wanted Romney to win, the best thing he could do is keep his mouth shut.
