82 is not that high of a score for an ACU rating. It is just a tiny bit higher than John McCain and Ron Paul’s score.
I believe Dole considered becoming a Democrat when he first ran for local office in Russell, KS. I don’t recall if his parents were Democrats, or if Russell was more GOP-inclined; so he went with the majority. Dole always stood up to the conservatives and defeated them time and time again.
