MASON CITY Calling the Obama presidency an experiment that failed, Texas Gov. Rick Perry pledged Saturday night to bring government spending under control and reduce the role of the federal government in peoples lives.
Are you better off today than you were $4 trillion ago? he asked a crowd of about 100 at a town hall meeting at The Music Man Square.
He said most of the problems the country faces stem from out-of-control government spending, too many taxes and too much regulation of business.
Perry said American jobs are not going overseas because of cheap labor abroad, as many people think.
The main reason manufacturing left the United States is because it became so difficult to do business in the U.S. because of all the regulations and taxes, he said.
The EPA is my favorite federal agency to dislike, said Perry.
He said new John Deere tractors built in eastern Iowa will cost $20,000 more next year because of new equipment required by the EPA. Its a great example of federal overreach, said Perry.
I want to make government as inconsequential as possible in your lives, he said.
Perry is a strong advocate of securing the border with Mexico, using local law enforcement, National Guard troops, aviation support and fast response teams.
When I am president, we will shut down that border within one year, he said.
He stressed his experience as governor of Texas for 11 years and as a Washington outsider as things that distinguish him from most of the other Republican challengers.
Who is most prepared? Who has the vision? Who has the experience? Who is most likely not to be absorbed by what goes on in Washington? he asked.
Im the one outsider, the only one who has been fighting Washington from usurping the power of the states.
Other Perry points:
Congress should be a part-time job with members coming back to jobs in their districts when Congress is not in session.
There should be a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget.
There should be a 20 percent federal flat tax.
He will veto any bill that has earmarks money for pet projects attached to it.
He favors the proposed oil pipeline from Canada. Im an all-of-the above energy guy, said Perry.
He said the framers of the Constitution and signers of the Declaration of Independence did not envision the oppressive country America has become.
Our freedoms and liberties have become smaller and smaller. Im not sure our founding fathers would recognize this country as it is today, said Perry.
He said as a young man and as governor, he never intended to run for president but is committed to serving the country.
He quoted the Old Testament book of Isaiah, chapter 6, verse 8: Here I am. Send me.

Individual states set things up so you can deside which government is least objectionable to you. All you have to do is move to the place that most matches your beliefs and then you and your neighbors keep it that way.
Experiment? It was more like an enema.
Ditto that CW! They're comin' around.
“I want them BOTH kept of of it - and by the way, so does the constitution.”
Ummm...no it doesn’t. Go read Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution then get back to me.
Let me try it this way...Rush knows we’ve had many Progressive Presidents but he has said, this is the first time we’ve elected a President that fundamentally can’t stand this country and fundamentally wants to punish it for it’s perceived sins against victims here and worldwide. To paraphrase Rush.
Rush calls it shocking and says people don’t want to believe we could elect someone as President of America who can’t stand the country.
That’s what I think Perry referrenced when he said, an experiment that failed.
Also this, Obama promised some good sounding things such as unifying us above our partisan differences. What we actually got was something very, very different.
Look at the Constitution. That’s where he gets it from.
The powers are reserved to the states that aren’t expressly given to the Feds.
Do you assume that he means every state idea to help a business is good?
He absolutely does not mean that...and if in your state you don’t like what the state is doing, by all means oppose it. There in your state, you have a much better chance of affecting change than if it’s done in Washington DC.
But the Constitution says what it says.
There is no contradiction, although some people will perceive one because they just don’t understand where this is coming from.
Perry adamantly opposes Romneycare.
But the Constitution would allow Romneycare in a state, which puts the burden on the people of any state to control their own destinies by holding politicians accountable when they do something as boneheaded as that...
Are you better off today than you were $4 trillion ago?
That’s a brilliant line. I wish I’d thought of it.
So then, Perry understands the notion of Freedom from the power of the Federal Government, but not Freedom from the power of the individual State Governments?
That’s for the citizens of each state to decide. The strength of the federal system is that little experiments can be done at the state level and what doesn’t work can learned from without putting the whole nation at risk. If CA wants to regulate business to death, they can do so and reap the consequences. For this to work though, the feds have to stop bailing out failure.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.

I sent a note to the reporter telling him I forwarded his story to several friends along with the comment: “If the national press produced reports as good as this one, we would have a heck of a lot better idea of whom to back.”

I think that the face to face exchanges between Iowans & Perry will be a bigger factor in this first Primary.
And fortunately Perry is a very authentic candidate who connects well with people!
Love the quote. I think he means it.
I think that’s an excellent point about manufacturing and I really want jobs to stop going overseas.
I’m sick of not being able to understand anyone I call about anything... customer service should be the last thing anyone sends overseas.
Well, don’t vote for him then.
Jeeeze, you’ve made yourself clear, go vote for Romney.
He said most of the problems the country faces stem from out-of-control government spending, too many taxes and too much regulation of business.
Bottom line. Fix this and most everything else will follow.
Even though they won in the end, Cain disproved that maxim. If conservatives recognize the media tricks, we can beat it. I think their biggest line with Perry now is that he's an idiot and loser. That perception makes people afraid to back him.
Well, they did that with Palin too, remember Couric? If we want to win we have to start fighting back, have to show how they're destroying real conservative candidates yet not even reporting on that loser in the WH.
Every time they print a negative about one of our candidates, I say we have a simple list of Obama's present votes, of how many vacations he's taken and what disasters he turned his back on to take them, and how many rounds of golf he's played during his term. Then we say that's it's not really a race against a sitting President because sitting is the only adjective that correctly applies to this playboy. I'm sick of lazy Americans who have like a 5-minute memory. Let's remind them.
There, I feel better :-)
I interpret zer0's promise as basically true - however, to unify us above partisanness, his plan is to make the 'rat party the permanent party, stamp out republicans, especially conservatives. Thus, his actions to bring in illegals is just one mechanism to move us above partisanness - by making the republican party irrelevant by swamping us out.
