Newt takes no-adultery pledge
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 12/12/11 1:09 PM EST
When the Iowa social conservative group The Family Leader unveiled a sweeping pledge on marriage and abortion over the summer, Newt Gingrich was one of the candidates who passed on signing it.
Now, Gingrich has answered the pledge with a lengthy written response, vowing to support a federal marriage amendment, reinstate the Mexico City policy -- and, per the stipulations of The Family Leader pledge, to be faithful to his wife:
I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.
Gingrich's full response after the jump ...
To Bob Vander Plaats and the Executive Board of The FAMiLY LEADER:
I appreciate the opportunity to affirm my strong support of the mission of the FAMiLY LEADER by solemnly vowing to defend and strengthen the family through the following actions I would take as President of the United States.
Defending Marriage. As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts. I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification. I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.

This time for sure. Might as well change his name to Bullwinkle.
Oh brother. He already presumably took vows to be faithful to his wife when he got married. The rest is between him and his wife. This is just a vulgar and unnecessary campaign gimmick.
Didn't he already do that each time he got married, promising to forsake all others?
In all liklihood, Viagra won’t work on newt, but he could always go for an implant.
So when does the new “diet” begin? Is this a new years resolution?
I would have liked to hear him say it when he still had some sex drive left, but at 67, not so much.
This is where we have come. This is the great hope to save the country.
Really...are we all out here just that stupid?
That horse done already left the barn. How worthless.
Isn’t that what you do when you say your vows and get MARRIED??
I think this was a moronic move on his part.
We'd have to hope that he doesn't fall "too passionately for his country" again I guess, or there would be no guarantees.
Betcha Calista took care of this aspect of his personality with a tightly worded pre-nup.
I Newt can’t keep his marriage vows, why should I believe him about anything else?
How about the no big government pledge?
no progressive pledge?
no political correctness pledge?
no spending pledge?
no trampling the constitution pledge?
I could go on for days!!!
And an oral pledge ain't worth the paper it's written on..
That was my thought as well.
His own daughter says he has really changed. She ought to know.

There is nothing at this link that refutes the quote from the Salon.com article. Some incorrect versions of the story have Newt “asking” for a divorce while his estranged wife is on her “deathbed.” What Newt’s daughter clarifies is that Newt wanted to “discuss” the details of the divorce agreement with his wife, in the presence of their children, while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery for removal of a benign growth. Newt has admitted the truth of the “clarified” version.
Well, that finally does it, string the dude up.
All they want is your phone number anyway..........
