After a childhood spent moving around, Patti Gorcheff vowed that she'd never uproot her daughter. But she says an oil and gas drilling frenzy in her area has forced her to change her mind.
She and her husband are selling the family home and fleeing with their 15-year-old before the drinking water becomes contaminated, said Gorcheff, 56, of rural North Lima in northeastern Ohio. She's heard the accounts from neighboring Pennsylvania of contaminant-laced water being discharged into rivers _ and of fears there that, despite officials' assurances, drinking water might be harmed.
"I've never been so afraid," she said. "They're taking advantage of us because we're one of the poorest areas in the country. We have to move out of this area, we just have to.
"I just don't know what else to do at this point. I just don't trust these people."
The drilling activity promises huge opportunity for eager energy companies and, says Republican Gov. John Kasich, for Ohio's struggling economy. The vast Marcellus and Utica shale formations are already paying off in thousands of wells in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, bringing great wealth to landowners and jobs throughout the region.
"We're talking about a generation who have lived in poverty and this is an opportunity to pull them out," Kasich told The Associated Press in an interview.

How much they want for the place?
Might be a bargain.
Same old disingenuous class-warfare claptrap.
Thought the same thing myself.
Brita water filter $15 at Wallmart
more bad news for the wh. Jobs and oil independence.
Patti, you are just another of Lenin's useful idiots...shouldn't you be spending the day hiding under the bed?
Almost as scary as a broken Mercury light bulb or Flouride in the water. Oh never mind, that’s the government doing, so it must be ok.
I'd like to know if they hang on to the mineral rights when they sell their house.
I remember when I was a little kid sitting on the couch, looking out the window and gnawing on the window sill, guess that would have been lead paint, the EPA has banned it now,and makes it real expensive for homeowners to remove it,yet I’m still here;)
You got that right. They want jobs, but when jobs are offered, they being "taken advantage of." Well then, why don't they move away from their poor area? In short, they have solutions to their problems, but they (at least some of them) don't like the solutions. I guess for some it's much better to be a victim than a victor.

Truly, a miracle from G-d Almighty...
Jobs are scary;)
Non-union jobs are more scary.
Ya better run lady, we grew up under the shadow of oil wells in west Texas and now we all talk funny down here. As Bugs Bunny used to say....”What a maroon!”
Waaahh...
If you have the money to contemplate moving, you can buy a reverse-osmosis system and stay.
She's more afraid of what might happen, what she imagines could happen, than anything. It's almost sad.
Well, obama did say Republicans want dirtier air, dirtier water.
I see a low budget horror film in this:
“Attack of the Frightening Fracker! Deep Down He’s a Cold Stone Cracker!”
Did I say very low budget?
So we’re supposed to believe that these people in a poor area are going to sell their house (probably at a huge loss when people realize how strongly she wants to sell) and move just so get good drinking water? Does she have no idea how easy it is to get clean water these days? A heck of a lot cheaper than selling and moving.
Something fishy here.
