The Final Days of the Incandescent Light Bulb

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: In three weeks and one day the 100-watt incandescent light bulb will be illegal. In three weeks and one day it will be illegal to sell a 100-watt incandescent light bulb. And who did this? The federal government. The federal government, under the auspices of a hoax, mankind global warming. You know, I've been staying in a lot of hotels lately, been doing a little traveling, and hotels are like a lot of other businesses, they just run scared of any regulatory agency. Nobody stands up to regulatory agency, and you can understand it. So you walk in and you turn on the lamp and you know that it's a compact fluorescent. You know because it's inferior light. You know because it's small and tiny. You know because it isn't going to be sufficient. The Democrat led federal government is taking us backwards. The enemy of the Democrat Party is progress. In three weeks and one day, illegal to buy an incandescent light bulb. And you know what that means, when the 100-watt incandescent light bulbs are outlawed only criminals will have them. That means me. I will be a criminal. (interruption) Well, you can have them but you can't sell them, but they're still gonna be gunning for you. At some point it's gonna be illegal to have them. But if you can't sell them -- (interruption) well, if I use one in proximity to a turtle? Yeah, then it could be jail time.

Only if you need the light at the same time as you need the heat.

There is nothing illegal about buying or selling of this 100-watt bulb, they are just not going to manufacture this bulb anymore. Your item of application usually gives you the wattage guidelines regarded safe to use.

You will be able to buy incandescent light bulbs after January 1, 2012. 75, 60 and 40 watt incandescents will remain on the shelves until January 1, 2014, as well as a variety of specialty bulbs including three-ways, colored lamps, plant lights and appliances lights. Manufacturers are also working on making incandescents that have higher luments per watt capacity. -Is there really going to be a ban on incandescent light bulbs?
14 JANUARY 2011

I don't understand the hording thing either.

So what you just said was that Rush either doesn't know what he is talking about or he lied.

Fifteen years ago, $11 a month saved, for 15 years with inflation in electric bills. $2,000 or more I would say. Normal amount of lights, with 2 rental rooms.

Here's my beef on incandescents verses CFLs.

Requirements for cleaning up after an incandescent bulb breaks

Throw it in the trash can.

Cleaning up after a CFL breaks.

Bag it. If there is no place to recycle your CFL light bulb, seal in a plastic bag and put it in the trash. Don't place a CFL bulb, or anything that contains mercury, in an incinerator.

Pay to get rid of it. Some companies will dispose of CFL light bulbs for a fee, usually somewhere between a quarter and 75 cents per bulb. Look in the Yellow Pages to find a local disposal company.

Sweep, don't vacuum, if a CFL light bulb breaks. Experts say there isn't much danger from the mercury, so just be careful not to cut yourself. Use rubber gloves to collect the shards on stiff paper or cardboard, and put the shards in a sealed plastic bag. You can use sticky tape or damp towels to collect the smaller fragments, then put the towel or tape into the sealed bag. Let the room air out for 15 minutes to remove any lingering mercury vapors. If there isn't a nearby window, use a fan to blow air out of the room.

Besides that, I don't like the government telling me what I have to buy to light my home or business. Let the free enterprise system work. Let the citizens of this nation choose which ones to use. If CFL comes out on top and incandescents turn off people, the companies making either will adjust and produce what works best for everyone. What is happening right now is another chunk of my liberty being taken away.

He didn't give the whole story, just like on Newt and the kids janitorial scenario—he forgot to report the lead in to that discussion which was on the vast income gap between the poor and the rich in China compared to the poor vs rich in America. Then it led to kids helping their families regarding income. Then it went bonkers from there because of MSNBC and the far Left’s pinhead interpretation.

Rush always knows what he is talking about. It's up to you to find the rest of the story, if interested. He won't do it all for you.

You can read the report in full or just go with the sensationalized version.

Manufacturers are also working on making incandescents that have higher luments per watt capacity.

I have always used halogen products which is about 25% less energy than standard incandescent lamps. I like that type of light in certain places.

This is for the 100 ONLY, you can buy the rest of the wattage group, you can buy the 3-way.. you can buy and sell after the store supply is depleted, you are not going to be arrested by the light bulb police. Then in 2014 the NEW incandescents could be available or the deadline changed who knows is a few years from now.

Bush signed the bill in 2007..some say he didnt know this was in the Energy Independence and National Security Act.

I use incandescents, have used the CFL and dropped it first off, cleaned it up with a Porter Cable filtered vac, threw the bag in the trash. One bulb I have dropped over many years of handling bulbs.

You are absolutely right - in closets where one might switch on for a minute or two, occasionally, the CFL is very inefficient and more costly, as they burn out by the turn-on, turn-off cycle, not the on time, as incandescents. Under the conditions of use in closets, or other low on time use, a incandescent lasts almost indefinitely. I have a downstairs powder room with an incandescent bulb that I installed in the 80's; and I do not remember ever replacing the incandescent bulbs in two closets, or in the cellar, so equipped (have been in the house since 1979).

I have replaced often used lighting with CFLs, and am happy with their performance there. But I do need the incandescent in some locations, for valuable and efficient purpose. The feds overreached their authority and their senses in banning these fine and very useful bulbs.

Ordinary CFL’s labeling says not to use in sensor controlled, or light dimming controlled circuits. Only the specially designed CFLs (and more expensive) can work with varying AC voltage. So stalk up on incandescent if you want decent porch lighting with automatic dusk-dawn and/or motion detection switching.

RE Getting the bulbs...
Regulation and bill updates http://ceolas.net/#li01inx
Various 3-way, rough service etc exceptions as well as Halogens, however all general service incandescents will progressively be banned in USA on EISA 45 W per lumen end-regulation specification.
Canada delay 2 years
Texas state legal make/sell since June 2011 (no manufacturing yet) 6 other states have repeal ban bills, as listed/linked

Of all the beeves about CFL's and other sources, there is one that remains, to-wit, flicker.

Incandescents on AC or DC, and halogens and LED's on pure (not pulsating, as from a transformer) DC current, provide the best reading light, in ascending order of desirability. Halogens put out lots of UV and could stand to be filtered (e.g. an optical coating -- available at your optician's -- on the protective glass cover).

Incandescents are the best, most reliable all-round reading lights. Even with high-frequency ballasts, CFL's retain some flicker at lower freqs and tend to tire the eyes -- something that's been known about flourescent lighting for, oh, 80-90 years now.

The Primatine Mist ban really burns me. It wasn’t even Congress that did that, it was just a fiat by unelected FDA bureaucrats.

Doesn’t matter. The government has outlawed DUST, anyway. Thank God, they have not yet outlawed DUSK.
