I have seen a lot of other commentators bring up versions of this point, but there is a reason why Republicans, especially conservative Republicans, see Newt Gingrich as by far their most qualified nominee and why they have been willing so far to excuse his periodic lapses from conservative orthodoxy. The reason is simply that under Mr. Gingrichs Congressional leadership, the Republican Party finally broke the New Deal coalition that had dominated American politics for more than a half-century, moving policy substantially to the right. That is a pretty impressive credential.

Nate Silver isn’t a conservative. He’s a liberal. He actually made his name as a BASEBALL analyst.
He actually is pretty objective as lefties go. And pretty smart as lefties go. His baseball stuff is superb.
Hank
Good luck with that.
Newt is already talking like a big govt progressive. Even talking about taking out other countries leaders...sound familiar?
He will tear the country down too.
I suppose next you’ll be trotting out Mitt’s conservative credentials.....
...oh...no...wait!
One of the 2 percenters is going to brake through!!!
Oh please. Welfare is as big as ever.
The 1996 welfare reforms authored by Newt ended a huge government program. The Democrats cried that it would be disastrous to put a life time limit of five years on welfare benefits. It turned out to be a win win for everyone.
“Growth and innovation means liberating the poor from the trap of the Welfare Empire through new programs that are tailored to local communities, that promote work and that incentivize lifelong study. Building on the success of the 1996 welfare reforms, block-granting all federal means tested welfare programs back to the states would help millions move from dependency to prosperity while saving taxpayer trillions.”

bump!!
But Jim....He sat on a couch with Nancy! That makes him a global-warming believer.
Of course, yes, he did testify AGAINST cap and trade the same day Algore testified for it. And he absolutely shredded Pigman Waxman when he did it....
But he sat on that couch!! Doesn’t that permanently disqualify him for anything but obliquy, venom and curses? I just don’t understand!

Perry is infinitely better over Newt/Romney. But, I understand that you folks want a progressive to run against Obama. No worries. Defend progressivism proudly. Don’t hide behind the skirts of NYT articles.
***** “I heard Newt also wants to appoint Nancy Pelosi as his global warming czar, and Al Sharpton as his education czar. Newt is phoney as a three dollar bill and for the life of me I cant understand why anybody supports the guy. Being a slick talker means nothing when you have no core beliefs” *****
Your tenuous grasp on reality is truly amazing ... it must have taken you 30 seconds to type your blurb and yet you survived in this plane of reality ... now the LIES you just told are unforgivable ...
Still trying to figure out how you posted while being in a straight jacket ... “Dragon” ?

As long as Newt realizes it’s a real 4 years commitment, I believe he can make a positive impact as POTUS.
I just want to know if he plans on being his own press secretary.
Newt voted against Cap and Trade:
“At the forum hosted tonight by Fox News host Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich said this about cap-and-trade:
But if you notice, I never favored cap-and-trade. I in fact, I actively testified against it. I was at the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee the same day Al Gore was there to testify for it. I testified against it. And through American Solutions we actively fought it in the Senate, and I think we played a major role in defeating it.”
It was a good Congress. Unfortunately, it fizzled. And, fizzled due to poor leadership. And, lack of a good standard bearer in the 1996 election cycle.
Newt was definitely good - momentarily.
What about his whole record of 40 years? Not just those 4 years.

BUMP
kidding me right? the NYT. wow.
“Newt railed against Ryan plan.”
I get so sick of hearing that. Ryan had a mandate in there and Newt said a mandate from either side was social engineering. The rest of Ryan’s plan was fine with Newt. Newt didn’t want a mandate even if it was from the Republicans.
Don’t say that disgusting comment again. Tell the truth if you even know it.
OK. One of the many issues I mentioned. Keep going...!
Nate nails it.
and the balanced budget...first since 1969. That sounds so good to me...heard some former congressman whining on tv about how Newt would make them stay and vote until 3 am in the morning lol lol...too bad they had to work for their money.
Lets look at all the candidates...Huntsman...in single digits, Santorum sagging poll numbers, Bachmann can’t get into 3rd because she is a shrill and congresswoman that never got any legislation passed, Perry....not doing well, Paul? well some may like the legalized pot...that leaves Mitt or Newt Gingrich. Gringrich will be a great president and btw...I like his experience ..look at Obama with his “on the job training”
Ryan plan has a mandate? What the **** are you talking about? Now, you are trashing Ryan because you drank Newt’s koolaid?
Guess so. And he even said it was a stupid move. But I think the conservative Republican rank and file and the grassroots tea party conservatives are going for him over Romney two or better to one anyway. And they’re splitting the moderate vote.
Course it’s early yet. The lately re-minted and under new management born-again, hard as nails, rock-ribbed, pro-Life, pro-marriage, pro-Boy Scout, anti-ObamaCare, anti-Mandate, anti-big government, ultra-conservative, tea party loving, lifelong hunter and Reaganite like you would never believe, Mitt Romney may pull it out yet! Just ask him. /sarc
