Pelosi plans to reveal information about Gingrich 'when the time is right' By Alicia M. Cohn - 12/05/11 11:44 AM ET

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is holding back some information on Republican Newt Gingrich that could detract from his presidential campaign, according to a report published Monday.

“One of these days we’ll have a conversation about Newt Gingrich,” Pelosi told Talking Points Memo. “When the time is right. … I know a lot about him. I served on the investigative committee that investigated him, four of us locked in a room in an undisclosed location for a year. A thousand pages of his stuff.”

Gingrich, who served as Speaker of the House, worked with Pelosi in Congress from 1987 to 1999. Pelosi also served on the ethics committee that investigated Gingrich for tax cheating and campaign finance violations in the late ’90s.

Gingrich filmed an ad with then-House Speaker Pelosi in 2008 to urge action on climate change, which haunted him early in his presidential bid this year. Gingrich called the ad “probably the dumbest single thing I’ve done in recent years” last month.

Republicans in Congress have been slow to rally around Gingrich’s rise to front-runner status in the polls, with former GOP colleague Sen. Tom Coburn (Okla.) stating publicly over the weekend he is not “inclined to be a supporter” of Gingrich due to that past experience.

But Democrats such as the soon-to-retire Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) have suggested Gingrich as the GOP nominee would benefit the Democratic Party.

"He would be the best thing to happen to Democrats since Barry Goldwater," Frank said last week. Goldwater is credited with reviving Republican conservatism in the ’60s.

Pelosi told Talking Points Memo that Frank “spoke for a lot” of Democrats. “I like Barney Frank’s quote the best, where he said ‘I never thought I’d live such a good life that I would see Newt Gingrich be the nominee of the Republican party,’ ” she said.

And Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), who also served in Congress with Gingrich and now holds a position of power as assistant minority leader in the House, charged Gingrich on Monday with lacking the temperament to be president.

“He tends to fly off the handle. He will say almost anything in order to get a charge. I’m sure that he’s not serious when he says a lot of these things,” Clyburn said on MSNBC.

Actually it was a GOP coup. Per wiki:

“In the summer of 1997 several House Republicans, who saw Gingrich’s public image as a liability, attempted to replace him as Speaker. The attempted “coup” began July 9 with a meeting of Republican conference chairman John Boehner of Ohio and Republican leadership chairman Bill Paxon of New York. According to their plan, House Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, Boehner and Paxon were to present Gingrich with an ultimatum: resign, or be voted out.”

The Dems want Romney to run so bad they are pulling out all the stops possible. If Romney is nominated the constant inuendo attack ads will be like nothing ever seen before — all because of his religious beliefs.

Perry is quickly becoming the only candidate left standing in this race and the sooner the play makers realize this the better. When Sarah Palin endorses Perry or at least indicates she is leaning toward him, maybe folks will wake up. If and when (thinking when) she full out campaigns for him, it will all be over for the poser in the White House.

Sure. And the Catholic Church “annulled” his first marriage too. The one to whom he had kids born. So he could maryy some more.

What do kids have to do with anything? Does the birth of children automatically and retroactively make all marriages legitimate or sacramental? Such a claim is absurd. And, if annulments are evil then what of divorce? Would you reject a man who had a divorce from his first wife and mother of his children and had then gone on to marry "some more"? If so you would have ruled out any support for Ronald Reagan as a candidate.

Really? So unless one is married in THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, Catholics don’t considered you married at all?

Puh-leaze. If you’re gonna make up stuff, at least do a better job of it.

She has nothing. This is a lame attempt to siphon support from Newt over to Romney.

Epic fail.

Well Cain is gone for Suspicion and Innuendo “Aw but he gave money to a lady and didn’t tell his Wife”. With Newt no one needs to guess is Public record

Alot of FR posters were played for fools by the MSM

Get ready for Mittens to be the Rep Candidate.

Sheesh. This time we did it to ourselves.

Technically you are correct. But the GOP is not the maker of "public images". That's the job of the Dems and the MSM. The Pubbies were just reacting to the good job done by their political enemies in defining the supposedly evil and reckless Newt.

IF you and the Catholic Church consider Newt never to have been married, then what does that make his kids?

Hint: It starts with a B.

And why bring Reagan into this theolical argument? RR was no Catholic.

After reading all the nastiness about each and every Republican candidate here on FR, I have come to the conclusion that Obama is the best this nation has to offer. Thanks FR for being so enlightening.

There is no doubt that the so-called conservative movement as it exists today thrills on eating its own. Democrats don't beat us, we do. The silly attacks from the Right are more damaging to any potential conservative candidate than anything coming from the Left. Nobody can survive the primary with anything approaching a shot at the general election. They are absolutely picked apart, and the opponent needs to do nothing to respond to them.

Of all the dopey comments in this vein which I see thrown around FreeRepublic, my personal favourite is the one declaring that because a certain candidate is less than absolutely perfect by some person's standards they simply won't vote at all if they are the candidate. Of course, this means they would rather have Obama than the less-than-perfect-conservative. That makes sense. When Newt takes a less than perfect view of abortion, which is to say a position 99% better than Obama's, these people then say they would rather take the latter. Ending almost all abortions is somehow terrible when compared to not only supporting them, but extending them beyond the womb and paying for them with my money. Only somebody on serious medication could hold such a position seriously.

This is incorrect. Legitimacy has nothing to do with questions of sacramental validity. The children born from that union are most certainly legitimate and there are no questions of bastardy. You are greatly confused regarding what an annulment is and what it does.

And why bring Reagan into this theolical argument? RR was no Catholic.

No, he was divorced and remarried which relates to your comments about candidates and the relations they have to their wives and mothers of their children. It seems odd to me that you are okay with people divorcing their kid's mothers and going on to marry again, but if they annul the marriage and do so you find it horrible. Very strange that.

That right there would call Newt’s judgement into question.

The annulment of Newt’s first marriage is not suprising; he married his former high school teacher at an age when he was unlikely to have the maturity to enter into a sacramental marriage.
