First post-Cain poll finds Gingrich holding double-digit lead nationally (Newt 37, Romney 23)

Newt Gingrich is benefitting from Herman Cain’s exit from the GOP presidential race, according to a Poll Position survey released on Monday.

According to the survey of likely Republican primary voters and caucus-goers, which was taken after Cain announced his campaign’s suspension on Saturday, Gingrich took 37 percent of support of those surveyed, followed by Mitt Romney at 23 percent.

Rep. Ron Paul came in at seven percent, Rep. Michele Bachmann at six percent, Gov. Rick Perry at three percent, and Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum with two percent each.

That’s a five percent rise for Gingrich over the last PP survey, where he came in at 32 percent. Romney remains unchanged from last week’s poll at 23 percent.

This backs-up the findings of other polls conducted when Cain was still in the race, in which Cain supporters said Gingrich was their preferred second choice.

According to a recent Bloomberg poll, in which Cain took eight percent, 28 percent of Cain supporters identified Gingrich as their second choice, followed by Perry at 23 percent, and Romney and Paul each with 14 percent.

“Gov. Rick Perry at three percent”

Yikes. Looks like Newt is going to be the anti-Romney this go ‘round. Not really thrilled with the Newtster. But I’d vote for him over Obama.

Romney? Not so much.

followed by Mitt Romney at 23 percent.

You don't have much room when your floor and your ceiling are essentially the same number no matter what happens.

Wow. Voters really do not want Romney. This despite promotion of him as the only option by both sides of the DC party establishment.

God, this is like one of those carnival water-pistol horse races! But ever time one of the horses gets a lead, someone takes out the pistol-shooter or removes the horse (choose your analogy to the analogy).

The “establishment” might be OK with Gingrich, though, he being an insider type and all.

Newt is absolutely not my first choice. Given my love of all things superficial, he looks like the Pillsbury doughboy to me. And that’s before getting to questions of ethics and whether he is a real principled conservative, yadda, yadda, yadda.

But, as Rumsfeld, who I used to be an extreme admirer of, used to say, “you go to war with the army you have.” If Santorum had caught fire by this point I would be more comfortable supporting him instead.

I am going to start reading some of the NONfiction books Gingrich has written to see what I think. At least I have confidence he writes his own books, versus Obama or so many other politicians.

Herman Cain for Commerce Secretary??

Yeah but what about that debate with Obama? Newt’s going to debate Obama and beat him. Did you forget about the debate? He’s going to wipe the floor with Obama in the debate. I can’t believe you won’t even mention the debate. That debate is going to be like the second coming of Jesus Christ Himself. Newt’s going to win that debate against Obama. Can you imagine when the debate comes on TV? It will truly be the most glorious moment in the history of the Republic and debating. In the name of everything holy I can’t believe you didn’t even talk about that debate!

I like the Rumsfield quote :)

My primary goal is first to defeat the cultist Romney, then to at the presidential debates expose Obama for the empty suit affirmative action poster boy that he is.

And Newt is just the man to do that.

Go Newt!

The country is in an angry, fearful mood.

The fear is palpable, and the anger is directed at Obama and the media, who sold us this bill of goods.

In times like these we always look for an old-fashioned gun-slinger, someone who will tell us who they’ll shoot first.

Newt has correctly judged the mood.

He has fired shots at the media, and correctly aimed at Obama, while not wasting any bullets on other candidates.

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum simply are not the alpha-types we’re looking for, we could imagine neither bursting through the saloon doors, guns drawn. We see them at the bar drinking sasparilla.

Newt has been painted as mean by the media for years, and now it’s backfired on them, because mean is what we want. We’re all in a foul mood.

Newt’s the one that questions the premises of left-wing “gotcha” questions. Newt’s the one that says Dodd and Frank should go to jail.

That’s why he’ll win the nomination, and probably the election.

The observation of many of us here on FR over the previous months that Romney is and will remain as Mr. 25% is turning out to be spot on. Cain drops out and Romney gains not a point. That's what happened when Perry went down as well.

The fact is that 75% of the voting GOP doesn't want Romney. He is the child of the media and the Republican establishment. It looks like they have bet on the wrong horse this time. Maybe, just maybe, we have rid ourselves of the MSM designated losers like McCain and Dole at least for awhile.
