AUGUSTA, Maine -- The Maine State Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Friday that human remains discovered six weeks ago in an unused freezer inside a Lewiston storage unit are those of Kitty Wardwell, who disappeared in 1983 at the age of 29.
The M.E.'s Office also has ruled that Wardwell's death was a homicide but her cause of death is being withheld, according to Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The M.E.'s Office said the remains were identified earlier this week through DNA testing at a Pennsylvania laboratory. McCausland said the results were forwarded Thursday to the medical examiner and state police detectives. Wardwell's family was notified Friday morning, he said.
Wardwell's remains were found Oct. 21 inside an unplugged freezer in a storage locker at Moore Self Storage on Lisbon Street. The storage unit had been rented for 19 years by 80-year-old Frank Julian of Lewiston, who died unexpectedly on Oct. 1. Julian's family members were clearing out the unit when they discovered the remains.
Julian was the last person to see Wardwell alive and was her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance. McCausland said detectives plan to interview Julian's relatives to find the origin of the freezer and when it was placed in the storage facility
I am simply suggesting that the Companies who own storage facilities institute policies to avoid hiding frozen bodies and meat.
Frozen apparently the problem in this case. But still don’t see the need for more regulations but then maybe you do.

I think bodies in freezers is because they’re large and airtight. I seriously doubt that a storage company is going to provide electricity for a running fridge for thirty years.

Just for grins I searched for Kitty Wardwell and all the pictures were of the guy who supposedly killed her. It’s just curious as to why media always comes up with the picture of the accused but never the victim. Anyway, no pictures of Kitty but plenty of the 80yo who died “suddenly”.

If I owned a storage company - with electrical power (i.e.for lights) I would discourage customers from hooking up a freezer within the locker - specifically to avoid odors from rotting meat and the possibility of hiding other dead things. The rental agreement would include the prohibition of same.
No government regulations or inspections involved - just good business practice. Lockers are considered private rental property with respect to search warrants - so that issue is moot.
If someone has a house furniture to include a freezer (while in the process of relocating) - I might offer an area for that purpose. It would be a secure section - where employees could access the appliances in the case of power loss, odors or leakage.
I’m sure there are prohibitions against storing chemicals, firearms and other contraband with many storage facilities. Maybe even local and State ordinances already on the books.
That’s where I went first. Sad though. Being dumped like so much garbage. Nothing to memorialize her. Maybe some relative will come up with one.

My storage unit doesn't have a power receptacle, the lights are inaccessible to the renters. I couldn't plug a freezer in if I wanted.
And did you notice that the freezer where poor Kitty's remains were stored WAS NOT plugged in anyway.

She went missing 28 years ago. I'm guessing that after nine years, it was a cold case and the police weren't actively working it. Her boyfriend, Frank Julian, didn't have this stroage locker when she went missing. Even after eight years passed by, he didn't have this storage locker.
According to the article, Frank Julian didn't rent this storage facility until nine years after she went missing (the article says he rented it only nineteen years ago). Unless there was some reason to re-open the case and start the investigation over again, the police wouldn't have any knowledge of this locker.

More than half of the fifteen missing persons don't have pictured posted - and statistically, it's not going to be the case that no photo exists of nine or so of the individuals. They're not homeless people or runaways when you read the descriptions. The MSP just doesn't seem particularly concerned with posting photos.
