Gingrich 32%, Romney 23%

Newt Gingrich’s surge to the top of the GOP presidential race has given him a nine-percent lead over long-time frontrunner Mitt Romney.

In the first national scientific public opinion poll since Gingrich garnered a key New Hampshire newspaper endorsement, likely 2012 Republican primary and caucus voters favored Gingrich over Romney by a 32%-23% margin, with Herman Cain at 14%, Ron Paul at 6%, Rick Perry 5%, Michele Bachmann 4%, Jon Huntsman 3%, someone else at 4%, and no opinion at 11%.

Conducted last night, the poll of 499 registered voters nationwide who said they’d vote in their state’s Republican primary or caucus has a margin of error of +/- 4%.  The full crosstabs for the poll: Poll Position crosstabs – GOP horse race.

Plus these Poll Position polls have not been much different than the polls they do use. I see nothing wrong with them.

Clinton was going to win reelection. Bob Dole was not going to defeat him. There was also a Perot factor. Blaming Newt for Clinton's second term is ridiculous.

All elections are tabloid elections for Republicans. There hardly seems much that hasn't been used against Newt in the past. Obama will go hard negative because he doesn't have a positive record to run on. That can only go so far. It's how he's often won elections. He'll be running hard against Congress like Truman because he lacks a positive record.

Here is a small tweak to the chart in post #1.
I had a few cells with the wrong weightings,
but now those are automated so the error cannot happen again.

Another wierd thing about the polls that RCP uses, and this is not a fault of RCP, ...is that the polls have DRIED UP since Gingrich took the CLEAR LEAD.

My theory is that those MSM polls mostly believe that THEY CHOOSE our GOP nominee just as much as the vote-counters of New Hampshire.

A similar thing happened when Cain took a resounding lead... The MSM polls dried up then too, because IMO, they wanted the attack machines to slime for a while before they released poll numbers again.

Today is the 29th! And the last of the MSM-polls shown at RCP were from the 20th. (NINE days ago!). That is absurd!
And just like the last time the MSM_polls dried up, the MSM attack dogs have been vicious the whole time.

Not good news for Romney. I’m managing somehow to hold back the tears. ;)

Happy, feel good post of the day... *smile*

...make it a tabloid election and all we’ll hear about is adultery, cheating and divorce. The man will be disqualified on moral grounds. Nobody with his track record has ever become president. People like him are very easy to defeat.

And Obama in particular has HIDDEN most of his past from scrutiny.

The MSM was NOT looking for dirt on Obama - and if they had found some they would have hidden it...

With all due respect you’re nuts. The fact that the entire GOP establisment hates Newt is a huge point in his favor.

No one cares about the personal stuff. Clinton put a fork in that. Newt’s the smartest guy in the race, will shred Filth to pieces in a debate, and right now is highly likely to be the next president. And he’ll be a damned good one.

He could screw a doberman pincher at high noon in a church on Sunday...woudn’t make a damned bit of difference to me.

If unemployment was 6% instead of 9%, Filth MIGHT have a chance. As it is, he’d lose to a Bernie Madoff/Lindsay Lohan ticket.

This chart shows something interesting.

People have been assuming Romney was a lock, without ever asking the simple question: “How does he get the nomination when after 5 years of running and millions of dollars, he can’t poll above 25%?”

It’s quite apparent that Myth has an absolute ceiling of 30% or so. That is, 70% of the GOP electorate will NOT vote for him under any circumstances. In that environment, I don’t see how he possibly wins the nomination.

Hank

The fact that the entire media ran with the ‘reassessing’ story today shows the power of the DC establishment driving both parties. Cain was cruising but has been knocked into the wall repeatedly by these accusations, and his other errors have since been magnified to create a false narrative that he is not a capable candidate.

He may or may not survive, but the damage done through the repeated attacks shows what we as a people are up against. The powerful elite will not go away. They must be neutralized and destroyed. That so many on FR have jumped on to the media pile-on of each of our candidates is a sad fact.

I’m with you, Hank. Gingrich has flaws like any politician, but just the chance to see him debate Obama is worth my primary vote.
