"ABO, 'Anybody But Obama' at this point in time," Michael Reagan said when asked who his father would be supporting in the Republican primary.
"He would support the nominee. Never got involved in the primaries, he believed the party should choose their person but he would have said this about last night's debate, which he would have thought was very good, as I thought it was very good. He would [have] supported probably Newt Gingrich's position on immigration. My father never would have broken up a family to try to make in fact a point on immigration, and so he would have applauded Newt Gingrich on that,

Even if he had 25 years of hingsight to guide his position???
One of Reagan's greatest attributes was learning from his mistakes. That's why he switched from being a RAT to a Republican.
“racist”, “bigots” etc. Man, you might as well be reading from a DNC talking points paper. I’m Hispanic and I want these people deported. Want to know how you do it? Make it mandatory for businesses to make sure they are hiring LEGAL workers. Impose penalties on businesses that hire illegals. Same thing for government programs, schools, etc. Let States like Arizona get involved with enforcing the laws and making their own rules. Enforce the laws already on the books. What happens next? Most of them will self-deport.
But this stupid remark is just laughable. You deport family's together, and if a family doesn't want to take their anchor baby with them it will go to the State like other abandoned children, and the low life scum parents should be deported, and stripped of their right to ever step foot in our nation again.
Then using what was probably the worst thing Reagan ever did, to defend a liberal like Gingrich. Mike isn't his dad, and it's annoying that all of Reagan's kids seem to have turned out as losers living off his name. Mike should have ran for President, and just said my dad would have supported it anytime someone disagreed with him.
The "deport them all crowd" doesn't want to hear this. You are leaving out the part about most of these people doing their best to stay under the radar. What do you think will happen when the government is actively rounding them up, and legal members of their communities are doing everthing they can to help them stay hidden? I predict a "peaceful resistance" movement where legal citizens allow themselves to be persued just to tie up resources. Certainly there will be tens of millions of court cases. Any deportation plan is pure fantasy and nothing more. So the question remains: What do we do with these people. So far Gingrich's is the only honest idea on the table.
His opponents are content to smear him with buzzwords and scare tatics. The EXACT same behavior from the left has given us the current Social Security crisis.

RR was decieved and bamboozled in 1986. I doubt he’d have made the same mistake again. He signed the Simpson/Mazzoli bill thinking 300,000 would be given amnesty in exchange for a secure border and an employee screening system (the I-9 process). What he got instead was 3,000,000 amnesties, no secure border and an I-9 system that was and still is easy to get around.
Different article. Same title.
What felony? Entering the US without proper documentation certainly isn’t.
So, if we can't deport them, we should give them som form of legality? BTW, I agree with you that we can't round up 10-12 million illegals, at least not reasonably or efficiently.
My answer would be to cut off the path to work and public assistance. No E-verify, no work. No E-Verify, no public assistance. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would go a long way to cause large numbers to self deport.
Just picture the evening news features of American police and troops cramming families including Mexican women and children into boxcars headed south of the border. They can make jokes about "the lamentations of their women," with a chuckle, as the wailing is shut off by the slamming of boxcar doors.
This is America, Anti-Newtie-style. They never say how they would do this without popular unrest and resistance. Imagine Detroit riots--Watts-- times ten--times a hundred.
Maybe they could study the Germans' methods. They had a similar program for purifying their population back in the day, I hear it was quite efficient.
Reagan’s plan was changed by the in the end and emloyees were not considered. That’s why he considered it a failure.
Felony????
Oh boy, just ignore everything we normal conservatives say and accuse us of being Nazi Germans. Way to go! Now we know how weak y’alls arguments are.
I remember way back in the 60s I was watching one of the “Met the Press” type shows and they had on Harlon Carter, head of the border patrol.
Believe it or not, illegal immigration was a hot topic even back then. Everyone was going on the assumption that it just was not possible to stop it when Carter said essentially this:
Stopping illegal immigration is not hard at all. Just give me the resources and I will put a stop to it.” He clearly was not talking about millions of agents either. He also made it clear that the real problem was too many politicians wanted illegal immigration to continue.
Most of them are the real dirty businessmen who put illegal profits ahead of their country. To my anger and sadness, there are plenty of people here on FR who are just that, dirty businessmen who profit from the illegal invasion.
I can’t tell you how much I despise these people.
Michael -
I love and respect your father, but advice on handling illegal immigrants is not something I would seek his counsel n.
You used to make far more sense. Been hanging out with Ron, Jr. lately?
Yes, I would be pleased if we did in fact start with:
A.) Deporting recent comers.
B.) Deporting those with no job and no kids.
C.) Tracking down every expired Visa.
According to at least one organization reference by Heritage, these moves alone would expel just over 50% of them.
I’ll take that over chest-thumping ANY day.
First time you're caught, 6 months in prison. Second time, 2 years in prison, a felony. And, of course, that doesn't count felony identification theft, felony tax fraud, felony false statements on government documents, felony social security fraud ...
You bet it’s a felony.
Over 60% of the U.S. voters want our immigration laws enforced. I am tired of a two tier legal system, where illegal aliens are let go when they committ crimes and can get a drivers license without showing they’re here legally.
You’re whining about enforcing our laws. Why? I never had you pegged for a bleeding heart liberal!
