MANCHESTER, N.H. This city has long been a resettlement site for refugees, sent here by the State Department for a chance at a better life. More than 60 languages are spoken in the school system, with Somalis, Sudanese, Iraqis and other recent arrivals mixing with children whose ancestors came from Quebec to work in the mighty textile mills along the Merrimack River.
But this year, after decades of taking in refugees, Manchester said, Enough.
In a highly unusual move, Mayor Ted Gatsas and the citys Board of Aldermen asked the State Department in July to halt resettlements here for now. A tide of more than 2,100 refugees over the last decade most recently, Bhutanese families coming from camps in Nepal has been more than the city of 109,500 can assure jobs and decent housing for, Mr. Gatsas said.
Were just saying, Let us catch our breath, he said last week in an interview at City Hall. This is about giving people the opportunity for a better life, and until I can get that person working and gainfully employed and getting to learn the language, I cant do that.
The mayor, a Republican who just won a second term, says he has nothing against refugees. His problem is with the International Institute of New England, a nonprofit agency based in Boston that brings them to Manchester and helps them adjust for several months, providing cash and other assistance.
Mr. Gatsas, a former businessman whose grandfather immigrated here from Greece a century ago, said the institute had consistently refused to seek the citys advice, most recently on its plan to bring 300 more refugees to Manchester in the current fiscal year.

A fact of family history. My dad was from upstate NY, and his family were among the earliest settlers in MA (1630). My mom's family was/is from central Louisiana by way of Georgia of similar "early arrival date"(and yes, I'm aware of what that implies). We'd go up to NY every year to visit, and my Yankee aunt was very proud of her great-grandpa's service in the "War of Northern Aggression"/"Civil War". Had his sword and stuff.
Studying the family history, I come to find out that the first MA progenitor was also the purchaser of one of the first lot of slaves brought into MA.
My mom's family were small farmers, and AFAIK, never owned slaves.
I thought that was somewhat ironic.
Yes, you found a link, congratulations you have proven that you and your’s are the perfect society and may at anytime insult my friends and family. What’s it like to be judge of all things? Must be a terrible burden.
If you are really a conservative there is no way a person could live in that cold, fetid, liberal cesspool that is New England. Move. Where you are now, you are NOT making a difference.
Somebody needs to stay and fight. We may not be the most conservative state in the union but some of us are standing fast. If more of your “conservative” friends were here we would have a nice conservative state again wouldn’t we. But no, you just sit there and hurl insults.
By the way when my parents are refered to as S-—t stains I do get offended.
It seems the only people that move down here from "up there" are liberals. It would be nice for a conservative to move down here FOR ONCE.

Gotcha. Over a short period; I would agree.
The conservatives may be passing thru Virginia on their way to Tennessee... :-)
You are right that conservatives should flee New England while they have the chance...they will be 'assimilated' by liberal Boston sooner or later.
Interesting list...thanks!
So you idea of being in a fight is to flee?
your
I take it back - stay there in New England. I give up differentiating, if a “conservative” (read RINO) chooses to live in that sewer then they are no better than the other sewer rats that inhabit it.
psst, IINE, why not take advice from the mayor?? Are to too good to listen to others???

I will restate my last comment. Rhode Island is a right to work state. Look it up. I work there. I work for a company that ships its work there, instead of having it done in CT.
All these effers in the non-profit "refugee industry" could care less, they are getting good paychecks off this scam while honest Americans struggle to stay afloat
Refugee Watch is a good website about this ongoing outrage
That’s my thinking too plus Somalians are Muslims. It seems to me that 80% or more of refugees we import are Muzzies these days. Christian nations owe nothing to such idiots, let them stew in the juices of Islam that the Koran preaches
I understand the Congressional Black Caucus is behind us importing so many African Muslims these days
I do no not need to prove anything you ignorant ass. If you do not want educate yourself on it, that is your choice. I work there daily, and the company I work for does a lot of work involving this.
