After Taking In Refugees for Years, a New Hampshire City (Manchester) Asks for a Pause
New York Times ^ | November 25, 2011 | ABBY GOODNOUGH

MANCHESTER, N.H. — This city has long been a resettlement site for refugees, sent here by the State Department for a chance at a better life. More than 60 languages are spoken in the school system, with Somalis, Sudanese, Iraqis and other recent arrivals mixing with children whose ancestors came from Quebec to work in the mighty textile mills along the Merrimack River.

But this year, after decades of taking in refugees, Manchester said, “Enough.”

In a highly unusual move, Mayor Ted Gatsas and the city’s Board of Aldermen asked the State Department in July to halt resettlements here for now. A tide of more than 2,100 refugees over the last decade — most recently, Bhutanese families coming from camps in Nepal — has been more than the city of 109,500 can assure jobs and decent housing for, Mr. Gatsas said.

“We’re just saying, ‘Let us catch our breath,’ ” he said last week in an interview at City Hall. “This is about giving people the opportunity for a better life, and until I can get that person working and gainfully employed and getting to learn the language, I can’t do that.”

The mayor, a Republican who just won a second term, says he has nothing against refugees. His problem is with the International Institute of New England, a nonprofit agency based in Boston that brings them to Manchester and helps them adjust for several months, providing cash and other assistance.

Mr. Gatsas, a former businessman whose grandfather immigrated here from Greece a century ago, said the institute had consistently refused to seek the city’s advice, most recently on its plan to bring 300 more refugees to Manchester in the current fiscal year.

The Institute ignores the city’s concerns then claims to be shocked when the city says no more? Typical liberal arrogance. The govt keeps bringing uneducated, illiterate, poor health, non english speaking 3rd worlders into our country and putting them on welfare. “Food Bank orientation”? Real good.

The New York Times is having a snit over this, obviously. They want to flood our country with so many foreigners we lose our identity and this makes Communism and fascism easier to implement.

“This is about giving people the opportunity for a better life, and until I can get that person working and gainfully employed and getting to learn the language, I can’t do that.”

So a mayor is supposed to play Communist Czar and provide for all? WTH?

This is the thinking process of a NH Republican, and yes their primary is the most important.

If they are based out of Boston, then let them help settle these people in Boston. Otherwise it’s a typical Lib move. If it’s dirty, smells or is offensive to sight. Then put it in someone Else’s backyard.

Actually, those particular group of people aren’t a problem per se. What’s the problem is putting SO MANY in a small economic zone. What the hell’s wrong with putting them in the environs of BOSTON? In the 70s, San Diego, where I lived for most of my life, saw an influx of huge numbers of Vietnamese and Humoung [sp!] — and those people, some 30 years on have built strong solid communities. They are hard workers and their kids all picked up English and worked hard in schools. But that’s the thing — they came to an already large economic engine of San Diego — can’t say that about Manchester, NH (nice place that it is — it’s just asking too much of that relatively small community.)

Click here for the International Institute's 2010 Annual Report. There's a link to the report in the middle of the screen. Interesting reading.

Somalis, Sudanese, Iraqis and other recent arrivals mixing....

The great, unspoken truth is that those people do not share in the Judeo-Christian values of New England tradition, but rather evil Islam.

Throw in control of public schools and the so-called "mainstream" media and they should have no problem implementing their marxist goals.

My point all along has been that we have to look at our legal immigration as well as illegal immigration. These people are brought here by the US State Department and installed as legal immigrants. They receive some money from various NGOs, but also qualify for various welfare benefits; also, they can later bring their family members here, legally, for “family reunification.” I lived one place where I read that they would bring in elderly or handicapped relatives and put them directly on SSI.

And this is all because of a social engineering project of the US State Department to give us more “diversity,” which means that the lucky immigrants in question are generally impoverished, uneducated, share none of our culture or cultural values, and in fact usually come from countries and societies that hate us (many of them are from Muslim countries). GWB proposed that Christians fleeing Islamic ethnic cleansing qualify as refugees, and the Dems turned it down, so we don’t even have the hope that some of them might have something in common with us.

The entire system needs a redo.

See # 10, pic # 3.....there was a thread the other day where some heavy breathers on FR were extolling the "sexy eyes" peeping out from the shrouds of Muslim females.

Take another look, boys.....LOL

I thought this was about refugees from Massachusetts but then I read they want to work for a living..
Why would someone from another country want to live in NH anyway, the weather stinks and the people are surly.

It doesn’t have to be Islam; it can be anything but serious Christianity of any denomination. They are destroying our culture, and not even covertly.

I never found the people of New Hampshire surly, but I did find them very odd and strange. On the other hand. Any state that puts liquor stores in interstate rest areas can’t be all bad.

He’s a simple pragmatist. You know perfectly well what would have happened if he had said “We need to lock the gates and keep out these foreign hordes who are stealing our jobs and destroying our Western culture.” He provided a reasonable explanation that is going to raise enough outcry as it is.

Read between his lines: what he really said was “Until we get rid of Obozo and turn this economy around, we cannot successfully assimilate more immigrants who are going onto the dole and won’t join the American melting pot.”

I think it was an excellent response.

I disagree a mayor in say Alabama would have never said that. The fact that this Yankee mayor thought his omniscient power to employ educate and assimilate was not up to the task says a lot. Republicans in NH are RINOs all of them, even dinky little mayors.

That mayor could of said there are not enough economic opportunities to support an influx of unskilled workers at this time. It is a shame that a mayor whose prime duty is to keep the street lights on, fill pot holes and make sure the police show up is worried about "providing" jobs. It is ridiculous. I don't need to read between the lines I hear him loud and clear.
