WEBSTER GROVES, MO (KMOX) - A chain of three stores that sells survival food and gear reports a jump in sales to people who are getting prepared for the “possible collapse” of society.

“We had to order fifty cases of the meals ready to eat to keep up with the demand in the past three months,” said manager Steve Dorsey at Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters Inc. in Webster Groves. “That’s not normal. Usually we sell 20 to 30 cases in a whole year.”

Dorsey says business has been brisk since the spring uprisings in the middle east, as customers share concerns about political uprisings, the world economy and the future of the United States

Let me put in a plug for some friends of mine at SurviveUSA in northeastern Arkansas, near Evening Shade. They are doing land-office business. www.surviveusa.com

“Still, complete breakdown, such as the doomsayers envision, is just not in the cards, unless there is a nuclear attack with EMP and/or blast damage in major cities. I rate the probability of this as very low.”

Widespread rioting and looting is not so far-fetched.

The only con of M4 clones is the anemic 5.56 cartridge, which is so underpowered it is illegal for deer hunting in many states.
Every responsible citizen needs a serious rifle. Do your research carefully. There is much information and disinformation on the net. Talk to people who actually own the weapon you are considering.

....anybody ever see that Farside cartoon where the mob is heading one way with torches and pitch forks and one of them has a bubble thought going upward of a kiosk market table with a sign poted on it “Torches x dollars, pitch forks y dollars”.

Empty shelves will inspire future millionaires. This is America.

...plants will open, those logistics geniuses will get the materials.

Good post, Sam.

I envision things kinda along the same lines. Anarchists, OWS types, (fill in your thug here) take a few pot shots at fuel truck drivers. Their union, somewhat sympathetic to the nuts anyway, goes on strike. The miners, railroaders and tug boat operators soon do the same. Maybe a “tragic” refinery fire for good measure. Gas stations and grocery stores run out, the lights go out and the cops and National Guard are home guarding their turf. Commerce grinds to a halt.

Hungry desperate people lash out for sustenance. Dollars are useless, except for lighting cigars, if one had a cigar. Gunfire is heard, mostly at night. The thin veneer of civilization is stripped away in a fortnight. How does it end? Who knows?

Sorry for the melodramatic post, but that’s why I prep. If nothing happens, the local church food bank makes out and my son has a nice firearms collection.

Today’s market reaction to Germany was truly disturbing. GERMANY...not puny Greece or pathetic Italy. We may really have a BLACK Friday in 2 days, with the Dow down HARD. With Van Jones promising a “stage 2” of OWS next year, a “societal collapse” is not just possible, but probable.

It is reminiscent of the bomb shelter and survival crazes in the ‘50s and then again in the ‘70s. Isn’t it interesting that what drove those “survival” movements and this one was/is Marxism (Soviet Union).

In the face of all those, the Marxists and their useful Government out-of-control spending.

I find it equally ludicrous that the very person who demonized tax cuts now extends them and claims he’as a “tax cutter”. Yet, at least 40% of the population think he’s the smartest man on earth and it’s all Bushs’ fault.

So how’s the “hope and change” working out for everyone?

Better off just making a pantry and filling it with long-term goods you normally eat, and rotating through it. Besides most things if kept cool and dry - if they are in sealed packaging - can be just fine years after their sell-by or best-by dates.

I was so surprised that the owner wasn’t prepared. Sometimes I think I’m crazy to have so much food in the basement but when I look at the stacks of toilet paper that stretch to the ceiling, I get warm fuzzy feelings.

The 5.56 cartridge is not anemic in its civilian version (.223), loaded with softpoint or hollowpoint ammunition. Civilians are not bound by any treaties to use non expanding ammunition, and the .223 becomes a whole ‘nother animal with such.Perhaps not the ideal cartridge, but quite effective nevertheless.

Now consider what you just wrote and contrast that to the bellicose class warfare Obama has been demagoging, you know, the same kind of thing a certain German leader did in the 1930’s. Now try to imagine how the hardcore Democrat Marxists and their inner city brethren will utter lash out in such a scenario. It will be very destructive and much blood will be shed.

I have two concerns that are not on most people’s radar:

1. Instantaneous, worldwide cyberwar. Viruses, trojans, backdoors in those Chinese made chips, etc. could cripple our infrastructure in an attack that would dwarf Pearl Harbor. What if they take down the electrical grid and fry the transformers? It could be more effective than EMP without crossing the nuclear threshold.

2. Loose bioweapons from the labs in Libya, Egypt, or Yemen. Somewhere there is a jihadi scientist who has modified the genes in smallpox to make it invulnerable to vaccines and pneumonic (spread through the air like the flu). The jihadi has poor lab technique and worse personal hygiene. An accidental release could spread such a plague through air travel in days.

Stay prepared for anything!

Agreed. Sometimes I am startled by the number of people who fail to realize how quickly these various scenarious can spiral completely and dangerously out of control.
