Herman Cain is theoretically a great candidate for president. He's a smart, black, successful, conservative "outsider." But as the reality sets in, it's clear that Mr. Cain is barely more ready for the office he seeks than Sarah Palin (or Barack Obama) was four years ago. Cain's performance in a long interview on Monday crystallized this view which has been forming in the minds of many GOP voters in recent weeks.
Mr. Cain's responses in Saturday's Republican debate in South Carolina -- which focused on foreign policy -- were a bunch of platitudes about getting good advice before making a decision. Frequently, his answers on topics that he doesn't really know much about focus on a few points of process, on getting quality advice, on not needing to know everything in advance, and so on.
But this is the real world and these are dangerous times. While the 2012 election will primarily be about jobs and the economy, events across the Arab world and escalating tensions between Iran and Israel -- not least because of the IAEA's most recent report about advances in Iran's nuclear weapon program -- make foreign policy and national security expertise critically important in our next president.
If there is anything America has been reminded of by Barack Obama, it's that the presidency is no place for on-the-job training -- and it's even less so when potential nuclear conflict is involved.
Herman Cain gave an interview to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Monday in which his answers on questions about Libya -- and his further discussion with the newspaper's editors on broader foreign policy issues -- sounded like a student trying hard to remember the answers for a test he's been cramming for.

Here we go again. You are following the liberal pied piper right over the cliff. We say we don’t want to elect a professional politician but turn on the regular guy when he does not come off like a politician. So what,Cain does not know everything about foreign policy, he will have people to brieg him when he needs it. We must stop throwing our best candidates overboard at the drop of a hat. The lib media are going to select the GOP candidate, just like they did with McCain. Remembef how that worked out?
Exactly....that's the trade-off. I have every confidence when it matters, Cain will have the best information available and will make the right decision based on that information. Frankly it's appalling how the GOP bigwigs decided how this campaign was to be run....first they let the MSM frame the debate...these debates should have been moderated by loyal Republicans, and not by MSM members, whose only goal is the ease the way to Obama's second term.
Cain is ready. Far more ready than Barrack Obama ever was.
He loves America and knows the principles upon which she is built and has exercised those in the private sector to great success. I believe he will do the same as President and we will be better in all areas (economy, socially, foreign policy, defense, immigration, energy, etc.) as a result.
He is qualified according to the Constitution and I trust the man. Thats enough to this point for me.
He will have to gaffe and fail a whole lot worse than he has to lose my vote.
Get thicker glasses. I remember Bob Dole and Juan McCain. Hell, I remember George Bush I... he had the thing in the bag after the first Gulf War and just sat on his hands. I said before the election that he just doesn't seem to want it. He gave us Clinton with a bow on him.
I have never seen a videotaped session with local reporter like this. Typically candidates sit down with print reporters for an hour or two, shoot the breeze and then give their official positions on matters, which are then reported. What is this new gotcha videotaping of these sessions? Cain was not preparing for a debate. Michelle Malkin and many on FR are judging Cain far too harshly over this nonsense. I would love to see videos of Obama in 2007 in such sessions, where his handlers probably whispered stuff repeatedly in his ear (not that any such video would ever have been released). Once again the media is trying to tear a good Republican down, and we are helping them. Mitt Romney is very happy about it.
Herman Cain will not be the nominee. It’s just not going to happen. He is nowhere even close to ready for the job. I don’t think he’s even thought about many of the issues he’d have to deal with. Cain has bluffed his way this far using his motivational speaking skills, but it is apparent he doesn’t have the slightest clue what he’s talking about on issues such as Libya.
If he can’t answer the questions with “that’s why I call for a bold plan like my 9-9-9..” he’s screwed. After watching that video I’m not sure Cain could find Libya on the map.
Dems are already pumping [or pimping?] up Obama as a great foreign policy success.
Pubbies better have a candidate who can combat that and who is ready ‘on Day One’ to respond to the 3:00 a.m. phone call.
For all of his likability, etc., Cain is still the least politically experienced person on the campaign stage — and it is showing more and more.
Probably not, perhaps sound like it though as you say.
Cain had an awkward moment for sure, but I sure wouldn’t write him off over this. I’m sure not going to write him off. The media (with the help of many folks on FR) are writing him off and stupid and he is FAR from stupid. They are giving him the Palin/Couric interview treatment - who here REALLY thinks Palin was stupid, I sure don’t? Everyone steps in it sometimes.
Cain has answered on Libya many times:

Back from your pile again, bettle? You should like BS, provides food and shelter for your species.
Sorry about my atrocious paragraph above, I forgot to proofread before I posted!
Cain detractors are so sad. Especially here where I would hope integrity matters. The other viable candidates, especially Newt, are proven phonies. It’s really irrelevant how nice they sound because their word means nothing. Cain isn’t perfect but at least his word is worth something.
Probably not, perhaps sound like it as you say.
Totally clueless.
How would you know? He has no record.
I’ll take a supposedly ‘not ready’ Cain over any of the career politicians that constitute the rest of the field. Polished career politicians are what got us into this mess. And they sure as hell aren’t going to fix it.
This same story has appeared on FR earlier today. Talk about piling on.
Anti-Cain FReepers are mindless, eager to lap up the crap spewed by the MSM, who want to manipulate us into choosing Romney.
And anti-Cain FReepers are going to facilitate that. Good job.
I think the fact that he came out against an attack on the Iranian nuclear program has more to do with his falling poll numbers than the aging bimbo puppet show.
“Libya...Libya...Libya...that’s the one with Khadafy, right? I think they need a bold plan like my 9-9-9...”
