Obama Administration to Reconsider Christmas Tree Tax (because it's idiotic)

In the face of a national outcry, the Obama administration has decided to delay its Christmas Tree Tax—first reported here on the Foundry—though they haven’t said till when (presumably until the criticism blows over). ABC’s Jake Tapper reports:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is going to delay implementation a revisit a proposed new 15 cent fee on fresh-cut Christmas trees, sources tell ABC News. The fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2009, was first announced in the Federal Registry yesterday, and has generated criticism of President Obama from conservative media outlets. The program, which would have levied a 15-cent tax on “all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year” has been roundly criticized, including by several members of Congress. In a statement, Senator DeMint promised to push for a full repeal of “the single stupidest tax of all time”.

Watching Cavuto talk about this now.

I know Obama doesn't give a hoot about Christians but he does need their votes.

fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2009

I wonder if this is really true, or if somebody in the gubbermint jogged their elbow first. In any case, if true, it's an instance of crony capitalism at its worst. And it doesn't help that Obama and his family NEVER OBSERVE CHRISTMAS and don't even give their children Christmas presents. Eid, yes. Christmas, no.

This was just federal government business as usual, a tyranny of the minority over the majority.

Get the government to collect some money from all your competitors in the name of "helping" the industry with an unaccountable bureaucracy that you'll be in charge of.

They’re only giving up because there are other sources these days besides the MSM. They were rightfully called out and embarrassed by the release.

Is it a Christmas tree before ornaments or lights are put on it? What if there are no Christian symbols like angels or crosses, is it still a Christmas tree?

“the single stupidest tax of all time”.

Did this tax each pine tree that is made into lumber?

If it didn't that tells how bold 0bama has become.

The muzzies are coming out of the closet.

This has so many possibilities:

A tax on yarmulkas.
A tax on prayer beads and crucifixes
A tax on alter candles
A tax on prayer rugs
A tax on anything goth
A tax on pentagrams

A tax on anything made to serve some religious need.

Yes, it's true

This group of Christmas tree growers had worked on this project for over three years. It's the same program used by the National Cattlemen's Association's "Beef, it's what's for dinner" campaign and the dairy farmers' "Got Milk?" campaign.

Good find. I remember the “Got Milk” campaign. Very effective. I just assumed it was the dairy farmers’ association that produced the ads, not the Agriculture Department.

I find it very disturbing that the government should get involved in such ad campaigns, and pay for them with taxes or “fees.”

I don't have a problem with the government collecting fees from people who not only don't have an objection to paying 'em but have actively lobbied to give it to them.

To me, it's their money...and if they want to give it to the government and trust it to spend the funds appropriately, well that's their business.

I’m pretty sure you can get the Beef marketing fee refunded if you ask for it.
