UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.
As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."
"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

I don’t know how accurate any of this is. There are websites about this stuff, but they look like kook sites.
Thats entirely possible, but there comes a point in your life when you need to man the f#*k up.
When you look into the eyes of a 10-year-old boy, while hes being raped, you need to plow through your mental and emotional issues and get the old man off his back!
Deal with your own problems after the bastard is down and bleeding from his ears.
Look, my son is a victim of a pedophile. I would like to meet Sandusky in a dark alley for about 30 seconds. I would also ask that we wait until the trial to roast Paterno.
Discovery should be riveting. If the findings are that Joe is culpable then fry his butt.We do live in a society that we have to be proven guilty. Paterno is already toast.
What else could we expect from a NY native and Ivy League graduate?
I do my best to keep politics out of sports——they’re much more enjoyable that way.
Touche. Thanks for the quick response.

It's likewise with me to a certain extent. On the other hand, I do like it when a private, Christian school (even nominally) beats a state run school from up north. That's why the Texas Christian University victory in the Rose Bowl was doubly enjoyable over the leftist University of Wisconsin.
I also took pleasure in Bear Bryant's regular beating of Penn State through the years. In fact, teams from the SEC generally trounce their Yankee school competition. And that's a good thing IMHO.
That’s academia for you. Ultimately hesitant to engage in problem prevention and quick to take the easy way out.
Of course they should...I just can’t stand the double standard.
The lawsuits related to Pedo U. are going to set records. the sheer number of people who knew about this and covered it up for a decade.... makes Catholics look like pikers. These 8 victims, and.... you know there will be more.... will literally own PSU within a few years.
We've already "discovered" that Paterno is not worthy of coaching again...well, he thinks for another year...I & many other would say another game...
So, now that Paterno is beginning to come to "terms" of the situation, all the Board of Trustees has to sort out is the quibbles: Tomorrow, Thursday, or the end of the season?
I've haven't pushed to get JoePa behind bars. I've pushed for campus-wide accountability. As in MANY losing their jobs. NOW.
And since Joe lives on campus, that includes being summarily kicked off campus since taxpayers are funding it.
Joe, after all, already has another "job" waiting for him: A full-time one, IMA. He'll be depositioned day after day in civil trial after civil trial.
Nice "retirement plan."
And recruiting coordinator. There’s a youtube video of Spanier talking to McQuear-y about recruiting. (the former UAz swimming coach and some other coach are also a part of the interview.)
Our legal system requires proof of guilt. Our society (at least the moral parts of it) allow for judgment based on personal conviction. I would not allow somebody I knew, or merely suspected was a chronic drinker or drug user to look after my house or my dog, even though they had never been convicted of possession, DUI, public intoxication, etc.
Keep in mind, Sandusky hasn't yet been convicted of anything. Would you allow him to watch your kids, or have you already formed a judgment?
Back during the big “Hide the Decline” email debacle with Michael Mann and the East Anglia’s, Climate Research Unit, NASA’s Hansen, et al collaboration to lie about global warming, I decided that ANY resume that hit my desk that had PENN STATE on it would go in the circular file. I’ve been true to that. Just makes me wish I could do it for this, too....
When someone is treated like a god, they tend to think and act like they are a god.
Never happen, but it would be nice if the football team refused to take the field if Paterno is on the sidelines.
He was not cruising for little boys (some were 4th and 5th grade!), who may have been confused about their sexuality. He was stalking little boys from broken homes - homes without a dad around. He was stalking a particular victim to victimize.
I’m most sickened by the coward who watched as a child was raped.. who didn’t attempt to rescue that boy.. and watched while the rapist held his victim’s hand and walked away.
How in hell does someone like that sleep at night?
Sixty years of service to the community and very few people are giving him the benefit of the doubt. There’s a three year grand jury investigation that finds no fault with Paterno, yet every asshole with a keyboard - here and everywhere else - apparently knows the exact truth of the story. Rather than believe that a man who has never once shown any indication of poor character in his entire life did what he thought was right - reporting it to his superior and de facto police commissioner along with bringing THE ACTUAL WITNESS to them - people are acting, with NO proof whatsoever, like Paterno knew and ignored it. These people calling for his head are absolutely despicable. It takes an incredibly small human being to accuse a great man of being complicit in something as horrible as child rape with no proof.
I am ashamed these people are on this site. Absolutely ashamed.
Guilt by proximity? WTF does a student have to do with any of that?
Christ, this thread is absolutely chock full of reactionary morons.
already made that mistake once. I have never met Joe and he wouldnt know me from Adam but he’s taking the full brunt of this without proof he did anything wrong. I know my mom at 79 years old can’t remember yesterday. I will wait to castigate these folks until after I listen to the trial testimony.
I am surprised they are letting him coach Saturday. This is a nightmare for so many people. The kids and their families are going to have to go through it again. My prayers are with them and their families. I also pray for the student body. Paterno is like family to everyone in State College. He has sunk 4 million of his own money into the school in endowments. I am going to cut him some slack until I hear the testimony. Not in a rush to judgement. If I don’t like what I hear I will jump on the bandwagon without breaking any ankles. Not an Alum and I have no dogs in this race.
You can take a chance on ‘students’ taught and mentored by
Liars, but I don’t have to. The email I got back from PSU on my call
to fairly investigate him was addressed to “Dear Citizen of the Globe:”. You can stick PSU where the sun don’t shine.
Dear Citizen of the Globe:
Oh for God’s sake, these people need to get a clue and very quickly. Hell is falling on their heads at this very moment and that’s how they address a letter?
