Alaska braces for "epic" storm; evacuations begin

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - An "epic" storm was bearing down on western Alaska on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said, warning that it could be one of the worst on record for the state.

The storm, moving inland from the Aleutian Islands, was expected to bring hurricane-force winds with gusts up to 100 miles per hour, heavy snowfall, widespread coastal flooding and severe erosion to most of Alaska's west coast, the National Weather Service said.

"This will be an extremely dangerous and life threatening storm of an epic magnitude rarely experienced," the service said in a special warning message.

Nome and the rest of the Seward Peninsula, a section of land that juts out toward Siberia, were expected to be the hardest-hit areas, said Andy Brown, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Anchorage.

Powerful storms in the North Pacific and Bering Sea are common this time of year, but this event is unusual because of its trajectory, Brown said.

"It's going very far north," he said.

Officials in Nome issued an evacuation order late on Tuesday for people living along Front Street, a beachside avenue that serves as the finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, and for other low-lying areas in town.

Storm is a nasty one, no doubt about that. Hoping all find safe places til this passes by. Storm surge looks to be going inland more than known in the past.

I wonder if those “Deadliest Catch” guys are out on the water this time of year. I bet this thing is wicked out on the Bearing Sea.

Wasilla probably won’t be affected much if at all.

Its like a hurricane passing through Houston TX and Wasilla would be Dallas.

But it can be a killer for those who are not prepared and the remoteness makes it extremely difficult if they do need help.

Yeah minorities get hit the hardest, that means any white people. Really, out there the white person IS the minority.

I can just imagine some animal rights group setting up the jungle drums to rally support for a penguin airlift.
And the zebra polar bear.

When we move the polar bears to Antarctica we’ll have to move the penguins somewhere else.

You know they actually had a bout a dozen that showed up in Wasilla about two weeks ago, they were there one day and then went back to Anchorage, I hear they are camping out on whats called the park strip, which many years ago was an air strip near downtown Anchorage.

And it has snowed, the temps are about 12F above zero and getting colder.

"Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says. "This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon. Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said."

Yeah...adverse weather can put a damper on a good occupation. I would have to recommend occupying Hawaii for the winter.

Actually I have heard that the OWS in Hawaii is almost nonexistant, I guess they would rather go surfing.

Look up their escapades down in Sydney AUS.
