From todays briefing:
MR. CARNEY: Well, I believe the phrase from the Bible* is, The Lord helps those who help themselves. And I think the point the President is making is that we should -- we have it within our capacity to do the things to help the American people.
The White House adds in the official transcript:
* This common phrase does not appear in the Bible.
At least King Hezekiah was a real person mentioned in the Bible even if there is no Book of Hezekiah.
He was a good king, too.
His son, not so much...........
I used to have a sign at my secluded place in the boonies; “I forgive not they who trespass against me. John 30:06”
Its not so much that its not in the Bible, which it is not, but that it conveys a message that is in polar opposition to what the Bible tells us.
Adam and Eve 'helped' themselves to the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. They disregarded the Lord God's Command, and helped themselves... The result: death, disease, pride, lusts, and all the fruits of Sin.
The cure? Complete reliance on God and His Grace, and the Work of His Son - the Lord Jesus, to save us --- and not on ourselves ('By grace are ye saved through faith, and not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast...'). If Mr. Carney wanted to quote from the Bible to convey a message of 'self-help', perhaps he should have used:
2 Thess 3:10
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
Proverbs 13:4
The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
Proverbs 6
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
Proverbs 26:16
The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
In Gen 3:4-5, Satan states the lie that all of liberalism is based on - "you will be as gods, knowing good and evil".
This also implies that you can DECIDE what is good and what is evil. THIS is "liberalism".
The following verse fits them as well:
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and diobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. (Titus 15-16)
They actively promote horrendous evil. And by their neglect they conclude us in destruction.
Perhaps in the US Army Field Artillery Manual ;-)
Shakespeare did not quote from the King James Version of the bible, he quoted from the Geneva Bible. The Geneva Bible was also the bible that was used by the pilgrims, and was the most popular English translation well into the 1700’s.
A lot of folk who claim th ename but seldom if ever read the instruction manuel think that saying is in the Bible. But then
Barry warmed a pew in Rev. Wrights church of the Marxist
Communist for how many years yet claims he never heard his mentor shout “G-d dam America! That’s in the Bible. Like
Rev. like pew potato some say.
The Bible, that “G” and “C” guy impose rules and we wouldn't want that in a our post modern relativistic world, would we? The Bible and specifically Christianity (traditionally) teaches absolutes, right and wrong even if never detected by anyone else (unlike Eastern shame/honor based thinking), has the idea of personal culpability/self determinism. Christianity incorporates gender roles, defines the family, includes ideas about emancipation... and much of what it teaches simply goes against the gay, lesbian, transsexual, single mom, casual sex, abortion, childless careerist, domestic partner (whom one never marries but has children and lives with). Christianity's views on sloth, the excessive use of alcohol and so called recreational drugs... doesn't fit into the self victimizing government entitlement thinking of modern America. Christianity is literally “out of touch” with what America has transformed into and there is a reason why America is slipping like Europe into oblivion (We're just a little bit behind them). The message is as true today as it was 2000 years ago, we simply don't want to hear it anymore.
hehe...
Judge not, lest ye be judged
a secularists favorite bible quote.
That particular quote is Jesus speaking strictly about hypocritical judging. My standard reply is “The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any mans judgment...” 1 Corinthians 2:15
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.
Good point and from my citation of dates, it should have been clear I knew that his plays were all written before the KJV was ever released.
God bless, Carlos. +
