A US soldier based in South Korea has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a teenager near his base.
The 21-year-old broke into the studio room of the woman and carried out a sexual attack lasting several hours, threatening her with scissors.
The judge called it a "violent and abnormal assault".
The sentence was one of the longest given to a US soldier in South Korea. US government and military officials have apologised publicly for the rape.
Crimes committed by US soldiers in the past have sparked public protests against the American military presence in South Korea.
The soldier, whose name has not been made public, attacked the 18-year-old in the early hours of 24 September.
He broke into her room near the his base in Dongducheon city.
The court said the soldier had also stolen 5,000 won ($4.50; £2.80) from the woman before he fled.
"He deserves a stern punishment as there were no efforts to compensate the victim or remedy the assault," said the judge.
America has more than 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea - a legacy from the 1950-53 Korean War.

Something tells me he’s not going to last in a ROK jail ...
He sounds like scum, so I have no problem with it.
TDC, Camp Casey, 2nd ID. If it wasn’t for the military, that town would cease to exist.
RIP (Rot In Prison)
Whether this man is a soldier or not... if he broke into a girl’s room, threatened her with scissors and raped her for hours... he deserves time in a prison. Plus, if he did it there... he’d do it here. Just a thought.
I have no problem with it too. Always a few bad apples to spoil it for everyone else ...
Yep, he should have paid like everybody else instead of trying to get a freebe.
Not to defend the suspect, but South Korean law holds a “John” as a rapist if he does not pay for services rendered, e.g., by the hooker. In this case, the purp stole money and made threats with a dangerous object. He is in deep Kimche!
What would be the amount of her fee?
..5,000 won..? by any chance?
Just wondering...
I am confused. Where does it say that this woman was a prostitute? Am I missing something? Could she have been simply an 18 year old woman who worked at a clothing store or something?

$4.50? No, even in South Korea, such things are not quite THAT cheap, especially for foreigners.
Since the military carried spears and shields and concurred half the globe wearing sandals, there have always been a certain percentage of bad apples in the ranks. Any one who ever served in the military will know what Im talking about. It can be argued though that the numbers are most often far lower than that of the surrounding communities where the bases are located.
In this case the rapist broke her door in, then raped her repeatedly at knife (scissor) point. Why even mention prostitutes in this conversation?
All foreign prisoners in the ROK are held together in Cheonan Prison. It's not a nice place, but he'll be segregated with only non-ROK prisoners.
Unfortunately, the military doesn’t allow the requenting of prostitutes nowadays.
Hardly, an 18 YO in TDC could not afford a studio(pronounced hooch). The mama san who was pimping her wanted to send a message, you pay or we press charges. The GI was probably a repeat customer and she knew his unit number, that how they ID’d him. Many of the mama sans are married to some of the 1st sergeants on base. Many times they act as the enforcer. Or, she(victim) hid the money from mamasan and fabricated the story. A young 18 yo innocent girl would not be living on her own in that town. I spent 2 years at that base and the town, TDC, thrives on bars, prostitution and the black market.
You’ll have to ask eastforker his (or her) reason for posting about the town’s dependence on the military, but I sincerely doubt it was to imply that rape was part of the price for keeping it open.
Having never been to South Korea, I appreciate the info offered.
