The shaping of a candidate: A look at Mitt Romney's faith journey
CNN ^ | October 29, 2011 | Jessica Ravitz

Note: This is a long, long piece and I find it impossible to excerpt it in any logical way. ( GF)

-SNIP-

Romney, like the other prospective candidates for president, will remain under the microscope in the months ahead.

His past will be combed, his policies scrutinized, his record examined.

How much his Mormon faith plays into his political journey remains to be seen. But whether he likes it, whether his campaign can control it, the fact that he may be on track to become the first Mormon president in U.S. history will garner attention.

Romney's religion makes a difference to the liberal press and this article is a sample of things to come if he is the Republican nominee.

LOL..guess you skipped THIS item in the article: "Beyond condemning Jeffress’s comments and Perry’s association with the pastor, Romney’s campaign has made it adamantly clear that it doesn’t want to discuss his faith. Repeated attempts to speak with the candidate, his wife, his children, his siblings – and, really, just anyone – about Romney’s faith journey were denied by campaign headquarters. Even the reins it has on those outside the inner circle appear tight".

It's obvious that Mitt doesn't want ANY light shed on mormonism. Think he knows something you don't??

Don't you think it is imperative that Mitt make his faith the central theme of his campaign in order to fulfill his "every member a missionary" duties?..... which brings up the fact that FR mormons are falling down on the missionary duties themselves...since you don't have the caucus label to censor debate none of you are proselytizing the way you were in '07-'08.

Romney has rarely been right on any question, except by taking all sides of an issue at once, but this time he's right. LDS is not relevant to the fact that his socialism would make him a terrible president by the standards of any decent freedom-loving American. If someone with Palin/DeMint/Cain/Bachmann conservatism happened to be LDS, that would not in any way interfere with my willingness to vote for that candidate. It's the big-government socialism, not the religion that is and ought to be the issue. I suspect the MSM just wants to make conservatives look bigoted for opposing Romney, when the reason for our opposition is unrelated to his faith, just as they frame the debate as if we were racist for opposing the drug-addled communist occupying our White House today.

If Romney is as wishy washy about his faith as he is about his political philosophy he can’t really be much of anything.

But ......

I have been told by many good people here on FR that his religion will not be brought up by the press and that even saying it COULD be a problems with some voters proves me to be an anti-mormon.

I don’t believe that Mormons believe in lying at the drop of a hat. Romney’s dishonesty is obvious.

My point is, regardless of what you may believe on the veracity and doctrines of the mormon faith the main stream (left) media WILL have the OPPORTUNITY to use it .to hurt the Republican candidate it it is romney or huntsman

You're right sniper. Rank and file members of the lds sect of mormonism try to work their way to heaven through perfect righteousness, rather than relaince on the perfecting secrifice of Christ alone.

Mormon leaders on the other hand lie to cover up embarassing doctrines and actions of the FLDS/LDS Prophet Joseph Smith.

Did you know that Joe Smith retranslated the entire bible, it's called the Joseph Smith Translation, and the lds sect of mormonism under Brigham Young declared it a fraud and don't use it to this very day ?

Reid and Romney are of this ilk....Lie cheat, deceive, coverup, plunder, attack, destroy....And that's just what they do on sunday.

His past will be combed, his policies scrutinized, his record examined.

Do they mean like Barack Obama? Or like Sarah Palin?

We all know the contents of Sarah Palin's garbage can.

We still have no idea how Obama got into Columbia and Harvard with a mediocre high school record which included drug use. We don't know his grades or even any of his classmates from Columbia. We're told he was brilliant, but see little or no actual proof other than an impressive ability to read off a teleprompter.

Romney's religion is a plus as far as I'm concerned. They are the most conservative voting religious demographic in America and grossly underrepresented in the people who crowd our prisons and our welfare rolls.

Romney's politics, on the other hand, are a great cause for concern. Just the opposite of how the enemedia paints the picture.

Vigilante....You need to realize that they are not patriotic for patriotism's sake. The current generation of members of the lds sect of mormonism in the 30-50 year range grew up under "prophets" who made patriotism part of the religion.

Current "prophets" like monson and oaks allowed harry reid to address the entire BYU faculty and student body to bash the older "prophets" like Ezra Taft Benson and David O McKay. Ironically they all claim to be the singular mouthpiece for an eternally unchanging God(s). Here are Monson, Oaks and Reid hangin out with the marxist in chief.

Mormons will do what they are told, when they are told, by the guys in this pic. Every mormon child is taught that "When the leaders speak, the thinking has been done". America beware.

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Ezra Taft Benson

(Address given Tuesday, February 26, 1980 at Brigham Young University)
