Senators from maple syrup-producing states are seeking a law to make selling the fake stuff a punishable offense.
Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, proposed legislation Thursday to make selling fraudulent maple syrup a felony. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is called the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement (MAPLE) Act.
Leahy stated in a press release that he is alarmed at the increasing number of people and businesses claiming to sell Vermont maple syrup but actually selling something "that is not maple syrup at all."
"This is fraud, plain and simple, and it undermines a key part of Vermont's economy," Leahy stated in the release.
Collins, whose state is the third biggest producer of pure maple syrup in the country, stated that fake labeling hurts the agricultural industry and defrauds customers "who have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing."

The government is borrowing 3 billion a day and these morons are rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Such a sticky topic. I hope they don’t waffle on the decision.
This is simply a racist bit of legislation. After all a major producer of syrup is Aunt Jemima.
Fraud is already a felony.
We need a law against fake butter with tricky names.
True maple syrup, which is incredibly high in sugar, might send a diabetic into a coma. Thus, there is a continuing market for the false stuff.
Stolen valor.
Don’t we already have laws against false advertising in the Uniform Commercial Code?
HA...The War on Drugs !
Can you see the SWAT teams now?????
“STEP AWAY FROM THE PANCAKES! NOW!”
What’s next? A law to criminalize syrup production for private use?
I hate to tell them but I see collection buckets handing from maple trees here in southern Michigan in the spring. That’s gotta be cutting into the profits of “big Syrup”.
I buy artificial, sugar-free, kinda-maply-flavored goo. The Walmart house brand!
If something isn’t “Vermont maple syrup” - which any idiot should be able to say it is or isn’t, based on whether it’s cooked up from maple sap from trees in Vermont, or not - it shouldn’t be labelled “Vermont maple syrup.”
Can we make women faking it a felony also?
I wonder how much tax dollars were spent on committees to come up with an acronym for MAPLE.
Can we get a bill passed called the STOP Act (Senators Totally Over Paid) so they’d quit this fiddling while the country burns?
They need to prosecute anybody putting fake goods of any kind on the market. Fake drugs kill people. Fake aircraft parts are a crash waiting to happen. Now fake syrup. Medical concerns are absolutely real.
Syrup swilling squirrel worshipers gone rogue in Michigan. We even stole the name of the state.

Shush! Bloomberg might ban it.

The real damage being done to the Vermont maple syrup industry is the fact that a bottle of “real” maple syrup costs an arm and a leg.
