True maple syrup, which is incredibly high in sugar, might send a diabetic into a coma. Thus, there is a continuing market for the false stuff.
I buy artificial, sugar-free, kinda-maply-flavored goo. The Walmart house brand!
If something isn’t “Vermont maple syrup” - which any idiot should be able to say it is or isn’t, based on whether it’s cooked up from maple sap from trees in Vermont, or not - it shouldn’t be labelled “Vermont maple syrup.”
They need to prosecute anybody putting fake goods of any kind on the market. Fake drugs kill people. Fake aircraft parts are a crash waiting to happen. Now fake syrup. Medical concerns are absolutely real.
Shush! Bloomberg might ban it.

Absolutely wrong! Maple syrup (the real stuff) contains natural phenols, which make it far less a danger for diabetics than pure sugar.
So, label it accordingly. Most diabetics are responsible enough to avoid life-threatening sweets! Maple Flavored Syrup, instead of Pure Maple Syrup.
