Having tattoos and body piercings don’t help, as well.

The other side of the unemployment coin. Some of these folks are just unemployable.

They're employable, just not at the level they think they should be at.

Executive? No. Floor sweeper? Maybe.

“Who is going to read some of these atrociously bad applications and say, ‘Yeah, that’s the person I’ve been looking for?’ ”

IRS & EPA

But when their unemployment payments expire, then they put on a nice suit and run the spell-checker...

Stories are legion of inept or half-hearted applicants who submit resumes marred by misspellings, show up at interviews dressed for a beach party, make inappropriate jokes, fail to learn basic details about the job and company in question, and otherwise leave hiring managers aghast.

This is what you get when you have parents who raised their kids following the "everyone-is-a-winner-so-we-don't-keep-score" philosophy and send them to a school where they don't have to do anything to pass the course and know they can take a 99 week paid vacation before they have to get serious about finding a job and, failing to get that job, return home to sponge off parents who never could say "No" in the first place. Big surprise to find them walking around Wall Street with painted faces. Idiots.

They don't want to be hired.
They are just looking for an excuse to stay on the dole.

WAAAH. I didn't get the JOOOB. The BIG EVIL CORPORATIONS don't want young people/blacks/hispanics/women/fill_in_your_own.

Most are employable, but are not worth the minimum pay required by law.

The same government that educated them.

I reviewed a lot of applications for convenience store clerks, you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you how bad it is!

As a factory foreman a decade ago I saw this problem.

Too many of the new hires were just plain worthless and the more educated they were the worse they were. I had college grads come in and all but announce that they would be working in the front office or engineering lab within a week. Most didn’t last a week because they assumed that they could come to work when they felt like it.

One of the old timers said that people my age were a pain in the butt when we started but we actually understood that were were there to do the job we were hired for and that the boss was in charge.

And on the other side of the coin HR is as inept as the applicants and run for cover when accountability for hiring is mentioned. They hide behind profile testing such as the Chally test and others. If the applicant turns out to be a loser they have cover...”We screened and tested using the best available technology.” How about, you do your best to find the right person and some don’t work out so you release them? Oh, I forgot, not working out is someone else’s fault and the unsuccessful applicant can sue you.

The company I work for has been able to hire a lot of college graduates to fill $9/hour positions doing data entry grunge work.

They are all desperate to pay their college loans and they all seem to think their next job will pay them fantastic amounts of money.

Sorry, kids. The world changed while you were in school.

They’ve been passed through the public education system, without learning much, with A grades, and they’re told they’re “winners” because no one is a loser. Then, they get their piece of paper saying they’ve “graduated”.

Out in the real world, they apply for a job and find that the employers aren’t impressed with them and that they’re unqualified for even the most basic employment. They can’t understand why.

The purges in 2008 and 2009 were about eliminating dead weight and incompetents.

Anyone who shows up with a fluff BA degree is already in the negative. Speaking skills are difficult to find in applicants. Most aplicants who deal with the public don’t know that you have on 10 seconds to make a good impression and those hiring want to see the impression you make since you will be the face of their business.

the get hired stories on FNC CNN and MSNBC are utterly useless since they are speaking on the assumption of competence.
