He doesnt think its too much to ask of a job seeker. A resume, a statement of salary expectations and a single written paragraph that answers a question like, What do you believe a good customer service representatives attitude should be?
(snip)
Stories are legion of inept or half-hearted applicants who submit resumes marred by misspellings, show up at interviews dressed for a beach party, make inappropriate jokes, fail to learn basic details about the job and company in question, and otherwise leave hiring managers aghast.

Who the hell is going to hire these people? asks Heinemeier Hansson. Who is going to read some of these atrociously bad applications and say, Yeah, thats the person Ive been looking for?

Who the hell is going to hire these people?
The same government that educated them.
They have no idea what they are handing back to you. They merely stack it like the numbers say on the machine.
LOL - that drives me crazy, too! I always end up dropping the change trying to put it in my purse. I want change first, then bills!
As a factory foreman a decade ago I saw this problem.
Too many of the new hires were just plain worthless and the more educated they were the worse they were. I had college grads come in and all but announce that they would be working in the front office or engineering lab within a week. Most didn’t last a week because they assumed that they could come to work when they felt like it.
One of the old timers said that people my age were a pain in the butt when we started but we actually understood that were were there to do the job we were hired for and that the boss was in charge.
And on the other side of the coin HR is as inept as the applicants and run for cover when accountability for hiring is mentioned. They hide behind profile testing such as the Chally test and others. If the applicant turns out to be a loser they have cover...”We screened and tested using the best available technology.” How about, you do your best to find the right person and some don’t work out so you release them? Oh, I forgot, not working out is someone else’s fault and the unsuccessful applicant can sue you.
All part of the communist goal of having “the party” be the sole source of employment and/or sustenance for the entire population.
They are all desperate to pay their college loans and they all seem to think their next job will pay them fantastic amounts of money.
Sorry, kids. The world changed while you were in school.
Nope, they don’t do floors, windows or toilets.
They’ve been passed through the public education system, without learning much, with A grades, and they’re told they’re “winners” because no one is a loser. Then, they get their piece of paper saying they’ve “graduated”.
Out in the real world, they apply for a job and find that the employers aren’t impressed with them and that they’re unqualified for even the most basic employment. They can’t understand why.
Government.
They were scared witless someone was going to hire them. I told a bunch of them that the man who signed slips wasn't in and made sure he never came in, LOL.
"Have you ever been injured on the job?". His answer: "Yes".
The next question was "Explain injury". His answer: "Something that hurts you".
I believe it. Nowadays, grocery store cashiers have to look at the register to see how much they owe you, for even the simplest, easiest subtractions. It's quite discouraging.
I never did understand why someone would major in sociology, history, etc. except that they liked the subject. You’d think they’d pick a major that would help them land a job. My guess is that a fairly high percentage of college graduates who are underemployed majored in these or similar subject areas.
My wife interviewed an applicant who was then caught shoplifting on the way out.
The purges in 2008 and 2009 were about eliminating dead weight and incompetents.
Anyone who shows up with a fluff BA degree is already in the negative. Speaking skills are difficult to find in applicants. Most aplicants who deal with the public don’t know that you have on 10 seconds to make a good impression and those hiring want to see the impression you make since you will be the face of their business.
the get hired stories on FNC CNN and MSNBC are utterly useless since they are speaking on the assumption of competence.
Damn, I think I know that guy. Does he live in Chamblee, GA?
