I had an applicant that I placed 4 ones and four quarters in front of, then produced a fiver, and asked her to make change for a $2.50 purchase. She starteed to cry, as she did not know how. I believe it. Nowadays, grocery store cashiers have to look at the register to see how much they owe you, for even the simplest, easiest subtractions. It's quite discouraging.

And, if they make a wrong entry or get confused, and you say "It's 13 cents", they look at you with puzzlement and ask, "How did you do that?"

I know, it's really sad... When I worked at a chain drug store in NY back about 1979 or 1980, we used mechanical cash registers and were expected to figure out the sales tax in our heads. We had a chart on the register, but if you had to look it up each time, it would slow down the lines, and you'd be fired pretty quickly.
