Submachine Guns, Pistols Stolen From LAPD SWAT Training Site
CBS) ^ | October 17, 2011 9:20 AM | Pete Demetriou

Two separate investigations are underway Monday after multiple submachine guns and pistols used for SWAT training by the LAPD were found missing.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports the weapons were stolen from a building owned and used specifically for training by the LAPD.

The 21 MP-5 submachine guns and a dozen Colt 45 automatic pistols were taken from a locked container inside the Kennedy Building on San Pedro Street, police officials said.

The location — which formerly housed clothing firms before it was donated to the LAPD several years ago — is considered a secure site, Deputy Chief Michael Downing told the Associated Press.

While the weapons had been modified to fire training ammunition, the concern is that they could easily be converted back to fire live rounds.

“These guns can’t be used with regular ammunition unless they’re significantly modified back,” said LAPD Commander Andy Smith.

With the proper fittings, the MP-5 can fire live ammo at 600 rounds minute — potentially putting heavy firepower into criminal hands.

A second administrative investigation is also underway as to why the weapons were stored in a location with no alarms or security cameras.

“We always do an internal investigation whenever anything like this occurs, and we’ll have our investigators look at it from top to bottom,” said Smith.

Why does any police force require 600 rpm weapons?

To nab little Cuban refugees and send them back to Castroland.

I guess there are times when a fully automatic weapon is called for but they must be really few. For instance the British FALs were semi auto only.

I suspect the cops need full auto even less than the military.

MP5 barrels, $159.95 each, *here.*

There's probably a pretty good discount for orders of two dozen or so, though. And trades of .45 Kimber .45 autopistols would probably be considered, too....

This reminds me of the DUMBASS LITTLE ROCK ATF Special Agents whom stayed at a Memphis, TN hotel and left all their guns in their van at some cheap ass hotel in the 90s....right before WACO.

It was a little later than that- it was in 1997 right after Tim McVeigh's conviction, and Memphis Field Office spokesman Joe DeBiaggio had to entertain press questions about the possibility that the two events could have been related. It was an FBI GMC Suburban stolen from the Budgetel on the Memphis east side, not one from the BATFlops, though yep, they were from Little Rock prior to their reassignments to one-man resident offices in Horseshoe, Montana and Slagpile, Pennsylvania. New agent rule Number One is don't embarass the Bureau, and the dipsticks managed to do that in spades.

Neither did the reworked satirical version of Louie, Louie help matters any; you'll still occasionally hear short segments of that tune hummed or whistled around 501 Poplar or 225 North Humphreys, and you'll still get nasty looks from the feebs for it.

My list of what was taken included seven M-16s, three MP5s with 30-round magazines, two M79 grenade launchers and one lonely 12-gauge shotgun, plus 1,000 rounds of 5.56mm M16 ammunition, 3,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 4,000 10 mm rounds and two bulletproof raid shields.

There was another other little detail about the looted Suburnban you forgot to mention, The perps torched it, and it burned out, with some ammo still inside cooking off.

IIRC, they found half of them in a ditch covered by plants/leaves, and a few in another house. Still didn't get it all back though.

Nope. M79/M203 40mm HEDP high explosive grenades were going for $25-$75 each in one Memphis biker bar hangout for a couple of months afterward.

Did they call the cops?

Now, that's funny.

“With the proper fittings, the MP-5 can fire live ammo at 600 rounds minute — potentially putting heavy firepower into criminal hands.”

Isn’t it criminal that the police would have access to weapons that a good citizen is denied?

Those weapons were already in the hands of criminals, now we just don’t know which ones.

...LAPD went hog wild and decided NO one would out fire power them again and started passing out REAL BIG GUNS...

Only an excuse for the cops to play with the Big Toys denied to the public...

But at the taxpayer's expense...

Simunitions..... Not easy but can be cobbled back with new barrels an magazines....

Thanks for the clarification.

It wouldn't be that difficult to swap barrels/mags on a .45.

I can see that cobbling together a working MP5 could be a little more difficult.

Inside job. Bet on it.

Agreed; from the article: "[...] were taken from a locked container inside the Kennedy Building on San Pedro Street, police officials said."
