Submachine Guns, Pistols Stolen From LAPD SWAT Training Site
CBS) ^ | October 17, 2011 9:20 AM | Pete Demetriou

Two separate investigations are underway Monday after multiple submachine guns and pistols used for SWAT training by the LAPD were found missing.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports the weapons were stolen from a building owned and used specifically for training by the LAPD.

The 21 MP-5 submachine guns and a dozen Colt 45 automatic pistols were taken from a locked container inside the Kennedy Building on San Pedro Street, police officials said.

The location — which formerly housed clothing firms before it was donated to the LAPD several years ago — is considered a secure site, Deputy Chief Michael Downing told the Associated Press.

While the weapons had been modified to fire training ammunition, the concern is that they could easily be converted back to fire live rounds.

“These guns can’t be used with regular ammunition unless they’re significantly modified back,” said LAPD Commander Andy Smith.

With the proper fittings, the MP-5 can fire live ammo at 600 rounds minute — potentially putting heavy firepower into criminal hands.

A second administrative investigation is also underway as to why the weapons were stored in a location with no alarms or security cameras.

“We always do an internal investigation whenever anything like this occurs, and we’ll have our investigators look at it from top to bottom,” said Smith.

Why does any police force require 600 rpm weapons? ___________________________________________ Here's why:

Union Leos again show poor weapon control.

This reminds me of the DUMBASS LITTLE ROCK ATF Special Agents whom stayed at a Memphis, TN hotel and left all their guns in their van at some cheap ass hotel in the 90s....right before WACO.

They were about a mile from Orange Mound, and lost 12 MP5s, 2 HK33s, 2-4 M16s, an M203, and M79, some short barrel 870s and some Remington sniper rifles, flashbangs, etc.

Since there were 400 ATF agents there for some LEO meeting, they all simply marched door to door in their clown-ninja suits and went into every home looking for the guns without a warrant. Some Memphis TV Station got footage of one of the Agents saying "Let us in, or we are coming in!" (paraphrase) to look for the guns.

IIRC, they found half of them in a ditch covered by plants/leaves, and a few in another house. Still didn't get it all back though.

No worries though, after ignoring the Memphis, TN resident's 4th Amendment rights, I bet they had nice new shiney guns when they were on the ladder and entering the Branch Davidian compound on the 2nd floor though, where they shot each other in a crossfire.

Because a MP5 is one of the best close combat weapons here is. For going into houses it is one of the best.

Sounds like a Brit newspaper writer. “...it emerged,” is another curious line that covers for “no attribution.”

The Germans made a couple other close combat weapons for going into houses called the Panther and Tiger. They were used back when the safety of the house and occupants was of less concern, but they offered better protection for the user. Their intended use was longer ranged open field warfare, but they worked in towns as well.

They also invented the assault rifle, the Sturmgewehr 44.

Nope. It's actually Amish street gangs in LA updating their armories at taxpayer expense by the ripoff of the LAPD training site. The ATF couldn't be bothered because they were too busy running guns to the Sinola and other Mexican drug cartels.

Bottom line: Californians are sooooo screwed.

Yep, they need to get Sgt. Joe Friday on the case and perform a Dragnet.

I saw an old Dragnet movie on a local free movie channel. This was nearly a year ago.

I was struck at how those cops didn’t even think about breaking the law to get the bad guy. I mean they did just about whatever they wanted. It was actually funny.

This is the 4th time I personally know of which had at least 5 automatic weapons stolen, each time from a container or locker at a training facility. Each time, there was no alarm on the container, there were no cameras, and each time the LAPD promised it'll never happen again.

Mind, this is the same LAPD that has arrested in the past those who have had machine guns stolen from alarmed, locked containers with security cameras and trigger locks - you could see on the video the perps stealing the guns, but the owners were charged with criminal reckless endangerment for properly storing and securing firearms. (The DA in those cases tried to plead out to a very minor felony to take away their licenses, but each were defended successfully in court.)

Oh, and as an afterthought, they went out and found the thieves and turned them into police, only to have their firearms destroyed because LAPD never gives back any automatic weapons it seizes.

The investigation should focus on how many of the SWAT command staff to fire, starting with each and every one who was a member of SWAT the last time this same theft occurred.
